Senator the Honorable Dr. Joyelle Clarke, Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action, and Constituency Empowerment of St. Kitts and Nevis, commended the CARICOM Environmental and Natural Resources Policy Framework as a significant, directional, and instructional document. CARICOM shared via press release that Clarke emphasized that the policy links country-level environmental objectives with the broader regional ambitions.

“The Policy Framework establishes the blueprint for cooperation within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), providing guidelines for planning the protection, conservation and sustainable use of the environment and natural resources within the Community and its Member States,” stated Clarke.

She added, “The document creates a basis for effective environmental and natural resources governance in support of the objectives of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas, and the effective functioning of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).”

The Policy Framework was officially launched at the 118th Special Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED), recently held in Antigua and Barbuda. This ministerial gathering focused on environmental issues and sustainable development.

During the margins of this meeting, the Communications Unit of the CARICOM Secretariat interviewed Dr. Clarke about the significance of the document, as well as other key topics such as the protection of the region’s ocean space.
