Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) are set to introduce the inaugural West Indies Breakout League, which aims to highlight budding cricket talent from the Caribbean. The tournament will run from April 25 to May 10, 2025, featuring a total of six teams engaged in 17 matches to be held at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad.
The participating teams include the Barbados Pelicans, Guyana Rainforest Rangers, Jamaica Titans, Leeward Islands Thunder, Trinidad & Tobago Legions, and Windward Islands Infernos. To be eligible for selection, players must be under the age of 30 at the start of the tournament, along with having limited professional experience, specifically fewer than 40 List A T20 matches and less than 10 International T20 appearances.
This tournament aims to close the gap between local, CPL, and international cricket, with each squad linked to their respective territorial board and a CPL franchise. It presents a significant opportunity for emerging T20 talents to demonstrate their skills, paving the way for further advancements in their cricketing journeys.
Miles Bascombe, CWI’s Director of Cricket, expressed excitement regarding the upcoming event, stating:“We are excited to join forces with Cricket West Indies to deliver a world-class and sustainable tournament. This initiative is not only an investment in the future of West Indies cricket but also a valuable opportunity for stakeholders to witness exceptional talent and great cricket.”
The West Indies Breakout League is set to become an essential part of the cricketing calendar in the region, giving fans, players, and franchises a unique opportunity to engage in the growth of the upcoming generation of cricketing stars.
I am still looking and wondering if and when will we have a 16year old or 17 year old with half the talent that B C Lara had,or half the talent that Sobers had. Some of the test players are almost 30years, and their playing style is still pathetic. We have fallen to nothing in test cricket, a sport we dominated for so long. West Indies is trying to bend a corner for 45 years and we still cant negotiate that corner?
What is wrong folks?
