New garbage trucks to be acquired to assist with waste removal, says PM

PM Skerrit speaking at press conference

The Government of Dominica is in the process of acquiring garbage trucks to assist the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) with garbage collection in various communities.

This was according to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit while addressing a press conference held recently.

During a statement in early January this year, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the DSWMC Rhoda St John announced that the corporation was facing challenges with waste collection services and encouraged the public to refrain from placing waste along the roads, in the City of Roseau and other parts of the island. She further advised residents to compost where applicable.

“We are going to acquire some garbage trucks…,” Skerrit said. “We have identified some trucks based on the specific location given to us by the solid waste corporation.”

He continued,  “I have also gotten a benefactor that will pay for five of those trucks for us.”

The prime minister noted that based on the advice of the DSWMC, “we are going to acquire some dump trucks to assist in the communities.”

“Because some of those areas the trucks may not be able to access so we have the smaller trucks that can access those communities,” Skerrit explained. “So we are going to ensure that solid waste has all of the equipment that it has, the tools that it has.”

He added, “ We are working on that [and] eventually we will get about 10 trucks to the solid waste corporation plus some dump trucks.”

Meanwhile, he encouraged the public to engage themselves in better waste management practices.

“If we engage ourselves in better waste management practices at our homes then we would have less waste leaving our homes and going to the landfill,” he noted. “And if we were to respect the times and days that we have to put garbage out then that will also lessen the visibility of waste on the roadside.”

Skerrit also told those who indiscriminately carry their garbage from one village and dump it in another village to refrain from doing so.

Furthermore, he pointed out that one has to speak about solid waste management from an individual standpoint, a business standpoint, and a community standpoint.

“And of course, at the government level there are some things we have to revisit and I am happy that Dominicans are now recognizing the fact that it would be important for each of us to pay a fee for the collection of garbage,” he said.

A leopard cannot change its spots. Likewise, Roosevelt cannot change his ultra-selfish and reprehensible behaviour.

In recent times, the Head of government, allowed the Marigot and most of the health centers to rot to the ground. The health of citizens was adversely affected. Now, this very same administration has allowed the garbage trucks to go into serious disrepair. Again, the people’s health are once again at great risk.

A country’s health is it wealth. When a sitting government cannot prioritise the health of a nation, it’s time to kick these useless kleptocrats out of office.

All the incumbent DLP has done is to give the people Labour pain for twenty unbroken years

Make sure to get a big one with a compactor to collect the garbage you indiscriminately dump everyday from your mouth. You can also use to put the garbage in the rest of your cabinet and ministries and at PHQ. Compact all of it and drive yourself to the labass, find a good spot and stay there.

Only now you see need after public outcry. SMDH
