On September 26, 2025, the Commonwealth of Dominica will witness a historic milestone with the inaugural establishment and launch of a Trade Union Congress (TUC). Dominica Public Service Union, in a statement, shared that this landmark event aims to unify the diverse trade unions across the nation under a single representative body, strengthening efforts to promote equitable wages, safe and respectful working environments, and broader social justice initiatives.
For many years, the concept of consolidating trade unions into a unified body had been a subject of ongoing discussion in Dominica, said the DPSU. The organization added that what was once considered merely a vision has now become an accomplished reality, thanks to persistent efforts and strategic planning.
Since April 3, 2025, the four principal trade unions in Dominica—the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), the Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT), the Dominica Amalgamated Workers Union (DAWU), and the Waterfront and Allied Workers Union (WAWU)—have reportedly collaborated closely through a dedicated steering committee. This coalition has received consistent support from the International Labour Organization (ILO) in its shared goal to establish the TUC, as outlined in the media statement.
The first-ever Congress is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 26, 2025, with the theme “Consolidating Trade Union Power Through Unity and Solidarity.”
The keynote address will be delivered by Mr. Joni T. Musabayana, the Director of the ILO.
“Trade Unions stand for decent work, for social justice and for those who work to be valued and respected. Long live the Trade Union Movement,” expressed the DPSU team.
So looooong overdue. Congratulations!!
