The Newtown Afterschool Football Programme last week presented educational materials to eight deserving students in the area. The initiative, led by the director of the programme, Joffre Faustin, aims to foster both athletic and academic development among young learners.
During the presentation, Faustin stressed the program’s focus on both football and education.
“We are also concerned about the students’ education,” he explained. “We want them to focus on their schoolwork, be attentive, learn well, and succeed both in school and in their community and life.”
Faustin, a former national footballer, expressed his hope that the distribution of supplies would bring relief to parents, stating, “The cost of books, bags, and school materials can be a burden, and I believe this contribution will be a helpful support for families.”
The students received a kit comprising books, pencils, water bottles, and school bags. Faustin encouraged the children to come forward and receive their items, praising the community’s involvement in making the event possible. He also highlighted the importance of the program in promoting sportsmanship, teamwork, and community engagement.
Special thanks were extended to contributors such as Delnagis Sports Shop, Vivian Rene, and Roy Mason and his family in the United States, for their donations of uniforms, books, and school supplies. Faustin also acknowledged the ongoing support from local school staff and teachers, including Principal Mr. Frederick, who continue to assist the program free of charge.
Reflecting on the program’s benefits, Faustin shared, “After a week of school activities, students can come on a Friday afternoon to enjoy organized games and fun activities, helping them refresh and prepare for the week ahead.” He expressed optimism for future initiatives, mentioning plans for a bigger and better program in September.
Faustin went on to thank all those involved and encouraged the students to continue excelling both academically and athletically.
“Again, we’re going, we are looking forward to bigger and better things in September. You see our timing is a little off now. In September, God will bring everything back to normal. We are going to have a bigger and better program,” he concluded.
Big time commendations to the organizers of this program. There is a great need for these types of injustices throughout the country.
Twinning sports and education with the young and impressionable youngsters is an excellent idea. This keeps the children gainfully employed in wholesome activities and away from the decadence that is all around them.
I hope this is emulated by conscientious members of other communities. Then we all can look at the future with some optimism.
