Motorists in Dominica are being cautioned that come this Saturday, January 14, 2023, parking is strictly prohibited from 11 AM to 6 PM along the designated route established for the opening of the carnival parade.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police, Belgrove Charles, bands will gather outside of DBS radio station on Victoria Street. From there, the procession, which begins at 3 PM, will travel northward along Victoria Street to Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard, then east unto King George V Street, north on Great George Street, east on Riverbank, south unto Independence Street, and east on Kennedy Avenue into the Windsor Park Sports Stadium.
As a result, he noted that the following areas will be designated with no parking on that day.
“Both sides on Victoria Street from DBS radio to the Dame Eugenia Charles Blvd. Both sides on King George V Street, from Dame Eugenia Charles Blvd to the junction of Great George Street. Both sides on Great George Street, to the new west bridge. Both sides of the River Bank on each intersection with Great George Street and each intersection with
Independence Street,” he cautioned.
The same regulations apply to Independence Street to the EC Loblack Bridge and its intersection with Kennedy Avenue; as well as Kennedy Avenue from the intersection of Independence Street to the Bath Road Junction and the Bath Road Junction with Kennedy Avenue to River Street.
To accommodate the parade, a few bus stops will also be relocated between 1 PM to 6 PM.
Included in this is the Soufriere and Pointe Michel bus stops which will be relocated to Virgin Lane between Cross Street and Independence Street; St Joseph and Mahaut bus stop to St Johnston Avenue and the Canefield and Goodwill bus stop to lower River Street between Old Street and Great George Street.
A traffic detour will also be in effect from 1 PM to 6 PM, requiring vehicles travelling along Victoria Street to turn right onto High Street.
Vehicles travelling south from the city of Roseau will use the stadium link road, through the Botanical Garden or Independence Street, while those coming from the west on Turkey Lane will be rerouted to Jewel Street or Cross Street.
Additionally, there will be no entry into Victoria Street from its junction with High Street; Old Street from its junction with Church Street; Castle Street from its junction with Church Street, and Turkey Lane from its junction with Jewel Street.
To avoid delays, traffic congestion, or accidents, Charles encouraged drivers to use alternate routes instead of the Parade Route between 1:30 PM and 6:00 PM.
“The general public is urged to adhere to these traffic arrangements as we all seek to bring about an orderly opening parade,” he stated.
