Officials credit decrease in burglaries in Roseau to community patrolling

Lincoln Corbette addressing recent press conference

Acting Chief of Police Lincoln Corbette is reporting a decrease in the number of burglaries in the City of Roseau.

Corbette, who was addressing a press conference recently, said this is due to the increased presence of police officers patrolling the city.

According to him, patrolling is the bedrock and backbone of policing, and by doing so, the police are able to meet the members of the communities, listen to their concerns, and immediately address some of these concerns.

“So the officers have been deployed 24-7, that is 24 hours a day, and they’re out there patrolling. And it’s not about just giving tickets, but ensuring that the officers are there again in the case the public needs [consultations], they’ll be there on the spot,” he stated.“And we’ve seen, as I said, results. And we’ve also seen, significantly, a reduction of crime in the City. Burglaries in the City of Roseau are almost non-existent.”

He continued, “One–maybe every two weeks–we see a report on burglary. Again, I strongly believe it’s because of the presence of the police in the city  and the work of the police on the ground.”

Additionally, he said each police station will be sending out officers daily to patrol in uniform, not just drive around.

“Hit the ground running, walk the ground, meet the shopkeepers, go to the schools, meet the youth on the block, find out what the concerns are, meet the farmers…that will help to reduce the issue of crime and, importantly, the fear of crime,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, Corbette warned motorists about the issue of additional lights on their vehicles at night, which he said is a hazard.

“So I’m warning those who have them to take them off because we will be doing what you have to do, the patrols, VCP, vehicle checkpoint,” he warned. “This nonsense has to stop.”

He added, “You’re not going in the jungle, what are you doing with that amount of lights?”

Corbette encouraged citizens to cooperate with the police and support them.

“We are not attacking anybody, but at the end of the day, the police have their work to do.”

Thank you community,I have always said the police cannot work without the community. In the 70’s and 80’s the police carried out a number of successful operations all with the help of the community.I remember the community use to assist the police with transportation,I also remember no rogues, vagabonds and habitual criminals could be on the streets of Roseau after 21.00hrs.In those days there was Esprit de corps, friendship and brotherhood in the police force, you mess with one you mess with all, there were no crooks and traitors. Most of the police officers in the 70′ 80’s are still brothers, especially those who drove the DREADS back to society, those who were together in May 1979,those who were there during operation RED DOG.Those who were there when members of the DDF attempted to take over Police Headquarters, those who went to Grenada in 1983 and those who were trained with the 7th Special Forces 82nd Airborne. All respected and were friends of the community, today police disrespect…

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 7 Thumb down 4

Dominica really needs a Defence Force today to fight drugs and gangs, and also to unite the People, specially the Youth, in a common purpose of community service, morality and sacrifice. Both CDPF-DDF must disassociate themselves from all ties with Yankee Imperialism military and be trained by our preferent allies and friends.

You mentioned the Dread emergence times when DDF-CDPF carried out joint operations in the mountains. Let me honor here Raphel Registe a member of the DDF, who died in action in Belles in 1976.

I conclude: In our region Jamaica has a Defence Force, the Commonwealth of The Bahamas has it (Naval branch), St. Kitts has it, Antigua has it, Barbados has it, Trinidad has it… Dominica needs it!

      Congratulatitions CDPF and community!

Garson I don’t usually agree with you but this is one time you make sense. Looks like you had a bath with blue soap instead on that red – lavendar obeah sheeet that usually blind you. Finally bro!

You have highlighted the good old days of no-nonsense policing. When law abiding citizens rejoiced at the sight of officers while criminals cowered in fear. I have said the last true police officers were trained in 1988 by the legendary Alpee assisted by David Andrew and Albert Williams. But Chief Corbette, like or hate him is once again revolutionizing the force. Kuddos to the CDPF for going back to old school policing. Now, he must investigate and fire the rouges, vagabonds and my-parlrep-send me half-as. nuisances posing as police officers. Men like Theft-Act, Shadow and Satan must be smiling again from the great beyond.
