Plans for cruise village and smart cargo port in the works

View of the Woodbridge Bay Port

As the government prepares for an increase in economic activity, plans are underway for the establishment of a cruise village and smart cargo port. This was announced by Financial Minister Dr. Irving McIntyre while presenting the 2024 2025 National Budget.

According to the minister, the cargo port, to be established at Donkey Beach in Canefield, will be built on the foundation of resilience and digital advancement. “This new facility will be built to resilient standards to withstand climate effects and any other environment conditions that could negatively impact port operations.” He continued to highlight its technological capacity, “it will be equipped with smart technology to improve efficiency and to reduce clearance times.”

Meanwhile, the cruise village, Dr McIntyre says will boost revenue and contribute to foreign exchange earnings. “We envision that these duty-free shopping zones will be another source to draw foreign exchange and investment to our country, fostering a business-friendly environment for both large and small retailers.”

Local entrepreneurs are also expected to benefit from both projects, “to access a wider diverse international clientele to sell their quality products.”

Dr. McIntyre foresees an influx of tourists and locals seeking tax-free bargains, resulting in an increased volume in sales and an overall boost in the economy. He confirmed that a private developer is currently undertaking preparatory works for the new cruise village at its proposed location, Woodbridge Bay Port. The Woodbridge Bay Sea Port currently serves as the only shipping port in the city of Roseau

The Election Cycle Mindset of being forced to propose major and costly capital projects to show that the ruling party in power is doing something for the betterment of the Dominican citizenry is wanting. What focus groups were held and how will these have proposed projects advance Dominica and its citizens.
What ever happened to self-sufficiency and agriculture as part of our overall development plan on island. What about digital space? The national stadium was constructed and now we’re unable to host international cricket matches. All that glitters is certainly not gold underneath the DLP led administration.

What about Portsmouth!? The West Coast road networks around Canefield and Roseau could well do with a resilient ease up!
Move some of these developments to Portsmouth! Heaven knows that town could do with the new investment! Too many eggs in our Roseau basket! Heaven forbid a volcano erupts in the Roseau Valley and wipes out Roseau! Not wishing bad but this is how Roseau was created! Or a tsunami wash it all away!
Move some government investments to the North, it will be good for the North and the entire country – now that is what strategic resilient vision looks like! You all just using words but your actions show no understanding of “resilience”!

That pipe dream is still running? By the way, Dominica is now the most backward and underdeveloped sea port in the entire Caribbean! After 25 years of Labour party government there is not one major infrastructure or industrial complex built or created by Labour! Twenty five years of underdevelopment! God I cannot wait for a modern smart sea port, new cruise village and duty-free shopping zone, and international airport! After Twenty-five years of nothing it is time to show something Labour party! Not even a national public library! Not even a functioning international post office! Nothing of people and national development have been achieved in Dominica under Labour in 25 years! Skerrit time is now up with nothing achieved, nothing to show, nothing done in twenty-five years! We sure did learn to use the word resilience while destroying nature! A country of parrots simply parroting and recycling the same old same old budget! The say time will tell, well my dear Dominica, time is upon you!

Excellent post delivering the naked truth. Everything mentioned in that script can never factually be disputed.

What Dominicans have gotten from this twenty four years of unbroken reign of the DLP are a proliferation of NCDs, serious shrinkage of th purchasing power of most citizens, financial embarrassment, untimely deaths at the main healthcare facility, a preponderance of nuisance taxes and fees, loss of one’s independence, and an unprecedented rise in political tribalism.

Deaths are on the rise. Dominica could become the Valley of Dry Bones mentioned in the bible if the current trends continue.

A great idea for cruise village and smart port, a move forward for sure, BUT, can no other suitable site be used? Donkey beach is one of the few white sand beaches that we have, and provides sea access and entertainment to a lot of the “local people”. I love the idea, but the location has the sense of cutting off your nose, to spite your face.

This budget is an exercise in fantasy like many before. How long have we been hearing about new cruise village, constructing the best port in the region, and a miraculous transformation of Roseau.

These are just ‘feel good’ projects that are remotely feasible due to severe financial constraints the country is presently facing. These specific undertakings cost many millions in addition to the airport and geothermal energy. Money is not rain that just falls from the sky.

These bombastic lies and unfulfilled promises are meant to give the unthinking elusive contentment.

Just take even a cursory glance of the substandard standard of living of many thousands of resident Dominicans. The country is retrograding from the time Roosevelt took custody.

All these have sadly declined under the compulsive Liar: sports, healthcare, education, agriculture, economy, opportunities of employment, et cetera. Can you honestly dispute any of these with objective facts?
