PM recommits to eradicating pit latrines in certain areas

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has reaffirmed his commitment to the complete eradication of pit latrines in Atkinson.

The Prime Minister held a meeting with the Atkinson Village Council recently where the council highlighted their priority areas, most of which aligned with the government view as the priority areas there.

“Of course, we are going to completely eradicate the presence of pit latrines in Atkinson,” he said. “There is a list of 13 and I have approved that list, and we will finalize the quantity of each of these areas, because obviously we have to look at the location of homes, so the cost may vary on that and we will send the money to the council so that the council will implement the eradication of the pit latrines in Atkinson.”

He added that housing was another priority area mentioned.

“We agreed on the construction of some homes for residents there,” Skerrit stated.

He explained that land was acquired some time ago, however, there appeared to be mitigating issues, so further investigations are to be made.

“We are prepared to build on individual lands,” he said.

Furthermore, the prime minister stated that part of the challenge his government had in the past is that some of the potential beneficiaries had issue of land ownership, “so we have to try to help them to address that issue.”

He continued, “We are going to be helping them with the improvement of access in several areas in Atkinson. They have pointed out to us road improvements and so we will also be doing that.”

In March 2014, Prime Minister Skerrit pledged an initial $150,000 to the Atkinson Village Council as the government continued its efforts to eradicate pit latrines across Dominica.

“Those of us who grew up using the pit latrine know of the sense of pride when we started using a modern washroom,” he told the 16th Inaugural Meeting of the Atkinson Village Council. “I would like for us to work with the council for us to eradicate pit latrines in Atkinson. I am committing an initial $150,000 for that effort in Atkinson.”

In October 2013, the government launched what was described as a “war on pit latrines” in Dominica, which form part of its Home Renovation and Sanitation Program.

Twelve years ago this very same promise was solemnly pledged by this very same pathological LIAR. This is just a recycled falsehood with the sole purpose of hogging headlines in the news media.

The lies of this habitual Liar and his admin are bothersome. What is more offensive is that the Liar in Chief expects to insult the intelligence of all the scholarly citizens.

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

Fair point! Precisely my thought. With billions of dollars at his disposal, there was not much of anything to prevent the notorious fabricator from following through on his vow to these impoverished Dominicans.

Roosevelt your words are completely meaningless as your actions are the complete diametrically opposite. This is just one more of your broke promises that will add to your tens of thousands.

Interesting to note that the so-called ‘nature island’ (the one that welcomes ever more air and ocean polluting cruise ships, lays waste to the landscape to construct a third airport and has never banned plastic shopping bags) is declaring war on the most environmentally friendly toilet system there is. Way to go.

They don’t have water and cannot afford water bills plus whn hurricane hit pit toilet works great. I say if you in country keep you pit latrine. the earth will recycle waste. pit latrine need a redesign. it is therefore more resilient and sustainable than flushing toilet and better than environment.

Shaka, I beg to defer with you on this one. Pit toilets are a haven for cockroaches, these creatures spread diseases, the smell is suffocating, the faeces can enter the water table.

Do you want roaches to tickle your derriere when you sit? These bore-holes should be a permanent thing of the past.

LOL…. hey I said pit toilets can be redesigned. By this i mean more hygienic. Dominica does not have a sewer drainage system so that means most folks have thier septic tanks at home. that also means you have a hole full of crap with water that had all kinds of chemicals in your ground. The leachate from that water gets into your streams along with all the hormones and crap you throw in there. out of mind does not mean out of site. The shi. from the septic tank is still on your property with water all over. I am not recommending no flushing toilets. I am just saying pit latrine may be environmentally friendly just need a new design to make more comfy like adding an Ariel vent and better seal and location. Cover with earth once done. plant a tree.

        LOL…..LOL……LOL

it’s amazing our gov in office over 20 years and we in 2025 talking about pit latrine irradiacation again.

@Shaka Zulu. You may like the smell of stinky poo, cockroaches in abundance and not able to wash your hands after a poo(very unhygienic). I don’t! You can keep your pit latrines. I prefer my modern toilet/washroom facilities. No thank you to pit latrines. They belong in the dinosaur age.
