PM reveals gov’t is working on documentation for Dominican deportees from the US

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has revealed that his government is facilitating documentation of some Dominicans who are in custody in the United States (US) to be deported.

A week into his second term, US President Donald Trump intensified his crackdown on immigration, building on his campaign promise of carrying out “the largest deportation in American history.”

Since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested more than 3,500 unauthorised immigrants across the US. His administration has also started sending deportation flights carrying migrants back to their country of origin.

“As it is now I have been told that there are about three or four Dominicans in custody to be sent home and we are facilitating documentation, because there are some people who have no documents because of the length of time they are in the United States and we have to provide them with travel document[s],” Skerrit said during a press conference held on Monday.

He continued, “We have been advised by the US government that there are about 104 Dominicans that they have identified who would be served with eviction notices to be evicted from the United States for various reasons.”

Skerrit added, “They are not in the position to give the names until those persons would have been in their custody.”

Furthermore, he said  Dominica’s embassy in Washington is in touch with the US State Department, “which shares information with us.”

Meanwhile, he announced that his government has elevated the filing of the position of counsel general in New York as a priority.

“So anybody who is interested in the job you can apply to the Counsel General of Dominica to the United States,” Skerrit explained.

He made it clear that in order to hold this position, one cannot be a citizen of the US.

“That position is very crucial in coordinating the State Department and the various state agencies in processing Dominicans who have to be deported,” he noted.

You see what happens when all your appointments to embassies and ambassadors are just unqualified and unsuitable political cronies? We have Ambassador Aaron, Kelver Darroux and the rest of the gang at the Dominica Mission in New York but we do not have a Legal Counsel at the Embassy. So now that we have some real work to do on behalf of Dominica and Dominicans in New York, and not just partying, liming and pursuing personal university studies in New York, we now have no one trained or qualified to do the work of Counsel General. Send up Francine Baron, she is a lawyer.

What really seems to bother me is, some of these deportees are known to be Dominicans but they don’t even seem to have any legal documents, expired or not , to be deported to Dominica and PM Skerrit has taken the responsibility to manufacture documentation for them . So are some of these people CBI citizens? Another thing is imagine some of these people have been illegally out for so long and PM has to help find documents for them to be deported back to Dominican but some of them might still be on the election list here and some might even have voted on their names here. Imagine that people. That’s another reason why reregistration and election reform is a must man

  3. What IF?
    February 18, 2025

So if some of these people have no documents because they have been out for so long, to the point that this Skerrit government has to assist them with documents, what if the birth certificate of these people were passed on to cbi citizens from the middle east? What if the name of those people that have been out for so long even voted in recent elections, to change electionresults? For example, what if the correct name of one of the deportees is Jack Brown of Roseau central, but although Jack Brown has been out for 50 years but that name and birth certificate was given to a Haitian so he could vote? Boy what if that’s the reason why PM doesn’t want to give us election reformm and seems to be more interested in fighting for the rights of those in the diaspora at the expense of those of us residing here? Hey my name is What If, so I am just asking what if? What if? What if?

I am sorry and disappointed that I’m on the list to be deported back to Dominica when my father’s land at mangrove butter was acquired by government and his house was later acquired leaving me no place to plant a garden and no place to live or work at Wesley .I do hope that someone will be kind enough to have pity and give me a place to live and give a job or a place plant a garden

Why are you relying on your father’s property when you return to Dominica?Your comment lets us know that you have not done much in life to enhance yourself. Most probably wasted all your time overseas. Aren’t you aware that each generation is expected to do better than their parents, building on the foundation your parents leave behind? Hope you’re not too old to salvage your life.

A large number of Dominica go to America because they BELIEVE America is better,so they never left Dominica with a plan, and UWP encourage them to leave. They should have done like Labour power, work in America and build a mansion in Dominica with the US dollar. There is a photo UWP supporter from St.Joseph living in the Bronx, who is living on food stamps and handout from the church. The reason the majority of Dominicans in the diaspora are supporting Labour,is because UWP has lied or is continuing to lie to them. When it comes to housing, most Dominicans OWN their homes,in America most Dominicans rent or they take out a mortgage which they cannot pay.In America nobody can live confortably on a $15 dollar minimum wage,in Dominica a lot of Dominicans live on minimum wage. While Dominicans are hustling in the USA,in Dominica they do not care a rat’s A about two jobs and overtime.Life is better in DA as the deportees will see.Dominica nice under LABOUR,UWP will never win an election.

Skerrit added, “They are not in the position to give the names until those persons would have been in their custody.”

Only a wicked and mal intended person would 1. Give/make public the names of people being deported and 2. Ask for the names of those being deported.

What good does that do for you in your daily life? what use would that information serve? let those people readjust back here without ridicule, shame, negative gossip, maypwi or mal intent.

The reporters will be returned to Dominica and Roosevelt will have no clue as to how to assimilate them seamlessly back into society. The man is as clueless as how to halt his ever receding hairline. Can he clearly articulate a real plan of action to try to get these people to become productive members of the society? Clueless!

The deportees are not criminals, just foks who may have overstayed their visas therefore what you’re suggesting is unnecessary. They will simply be returning home, prematurely but it’s home and they’ll survive. Silly to think of it otherwise.
