PM says country is cracking down on gun violence

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said his government is doing all in its power to eliminate the presence of illegal weapons and firearms in Dominica. Skerrit who was addressing a press conference recently said one crime committed through the use of a gun is one too many.

“As you know the genesis of all of these guns in the Caribbean is from the United States and we have been actively engaging the United States government into seeing how we can limit, if not eliminate the flow of small arms into the Caribbean region,” he said.

He continued, “You will see across the Caribbean there are a number of crimes and homicides and murders committed through the use of a gun, so it’s an issue we continue.”

The Prime Minister pointed out that crime is a societal challenge and therefore it requires society to be engaged in solving these issues.

“We will do all that we can do to provide the police with the resources that they need and we continue to do so. And in all fairness to the police, they have been doing a very good job in maintaining the low rate of crime and are also able to solve those murders and bring people before the court,” he stated. “Even if we are not at the rate of our neighbour, we are not taking that for granted.”

Skerrit added, “We want to do all we have to do to eliminate the presence of illegal weapons and firearms in Dominica.”

Meanwhile, he mentioned that his government has heavily invested in scanners at the ports of entry and have been successful in detecting entry of guns

“We are pushing on that and we are working with the US Government. The French [Government] has also been very helpful as well in providing us with some resources to continue to combat illegal activities in Dominica,” Skerrit revealed.

Gosh…so concerned about this. Guns are people, community and economic destroyers. Have we not learnt anything from Trinidad, JA, Haiti?
How could our government allow that culture and supply to take hold? Impunity in governance always and eventually leads to disharmony and violence.
We should take note and reverse course now. Take the guns away aggressively. Start with the ministers and people of authority and all with connections to the police security services.

Only one type of gun control has ever worked.
Require every citizen to own 1 rifle, 1 shotgun, 1 pistol, and 1 revolver.
Require every citizen to carry the firearm of their choice either open carried or concealed carry.
Have your gun laws state that any citizen may come to the defense of any other citizen with the use of deadly force without any repercussions from the government.

I guarantee illegal guns and their criminal use will completely disappear within a fortnight.

However the drug dealers and illegal gun smugglers will assassinate every politician that supports this law.
Not to mention that all the bribes and kickbacks stop being paid.

You are just blowing hot air like a deranged soul. Blabbering what you don’t mean. When your wife is the only person on island with navy seals, snipers and soldiers, how can you come here like an accomplished baffoon and address crime. You wife was addressing criminal activities on island, and she said she CONDONE them.
Where did the blue barrel of guns go to? Did you address a gun issue inside of your parliament. This guy’s asinine comments riles me. I wonder why those days Chi-Chi is so “boo-way”…….Your evil work and wickedness seem to be catching up with you Mr Chi Chi.
    Your evil soul.

You have been at the apex of government for twenty consecutive years. During these two decades no serious and plausible plans have been put in place to make any significant dent in crime. Now it seems that you have had an epiphany.

If your actions would only match your words Dominica would be the envy of the region. Today, your incompetence, selfishness and greed has made the country the butt of jokes throughout the world.

This country, once a powerhouse in sports, agriculture, culture, and patriotism, is now an eyesore tethering on economic collapse kept barely alive by an unsustainable CBI scheme.
