Police Chief says CDPF working hard to intercept illegal firearms, reduce crime in country

Police Chief Lincoln Corbette gave a breakdown of various contraband seized in the country during police operations in 2025, including a total of 94 firearms, as part of concerted efforts by police to combat crime.

He made the disclosure during the Ministry of National Security and Legal Affairs press conference held recently.

Recently, there have been growing concerns from residents about firearm-related offenses in Dominica. According to Corbette, the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force (CDPF) is doing everything in its power to reduce crime and the fear of crime on the island.

“We would have conducted other searches, but those are specifically related to tackling firearms and use of firearms.  Ninety-Four (94) firearms were seized in the year 2025,” he said. “94 firearms were unavailable to criminals to harm our citizens.”

Corbette continued, “In excess, 1,300 rounds were seized, and they were in every calibre of ammunition.”

Corbette continued, “We also saw the seizure of an excess of 1,700 kilos of cocaine that was seized and destroyed. And in some, excess of 84,000 of those seized, were confiscated by the police.”

Furthermore, he said, a total of 160 derelict vehicles were removed from the streets of Dominica.

“So you will see again this year, we’re removing and tagging more vehicles to be removed,” he stated.

In terms of vehicular checkpoints, he revealed that the police have conducted in excess of 300, in addition to nearly 200 house searches during 2025.

“We’ve arrested, also, in excess of 50 individuals for ground-related matters,” Corbette stated. “I’m saying all of this is just to do with firearms.”

Meanwhile, he indicated that CDPF has established a special team of officers in the western area referred to as the ‘Farmers’ Patrol’, in an effort to reduce the incidents of theft of produce.

He added that, following a meeting with the farmers in Wesley, theft of produce was identified as one of the major areas of concern.

“And again, we have seen a significant reduction in the number of reports that have been made to the police by the farmers,” Corbette emphasized.

There is an urgent need for a comprehensive strategic crime plan. Fewer reports received by the police do not equate to fewer crimes. People have become so disillusioned by the failure and lacklustre attitude of law enforcement that many victims have given up on redress from the court.

Dominica needs people more caring, more astute, more disciplined, less uncouth, less trigger-happy to serve and protect the citizenry.

If crimes are not being reported it’s because people have a negative attitude towards law enforcement period. That’s a problem with black people “no snitching” right? We see cooperating with law enforcement as a bad thing. Why our people are so against authority is beyond me, maybe something to do with the lack of fathers in the home with so many single mother households and fathers not taking up their responsibilities.

While you’re criticizing the police, even when we have clear data to show they’re doing the best they can, people like you will record them, take pictures of them and put it on social media to generate hate against the officers, while simulataenously not cooperating in law enforcement operations which ultimately safeguard their own lives.

So who is the problem here? The police or the people?
