The police are advising the general public about some law enforcement measures that can be adopted to guide them in assisting law enforcement prevent crime and violence during the independence celebrations. During a press conference held recently, Head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) George Theophile asserted that the police alone cannot fight crime.
“You must know that crimes are carefully planned and executed by criminals. One must take every step to prevent and avoid becoming a victim of crime,” he said.
He continued, “Ensure that all doors and windows are locked especially when leaving your home [and] alert your neighbours to keep an eye on your home in your absence.”
Theophile added, “Give the impression that your home is occupied by putting on the radio and television.”
He also implored WCMF attendees to pay close attention to their purses, wallets, jewelry, and other belongings.
“Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings even if you are rushed,” he advised. “Keep items in your vehicles out of sight.”
Furthermore, he advised the public to avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
“You must ensure that you don’t carry more cash than is necessary and if possible use your cards,” Theophile advised.
Meanwhile, he sent a firm warning to those who may be waiting to cause mischief to the citizenry and visitors.
“The Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force will exercise zero tolerance [toward] any form of violence that threatens the safety of the community,” he warned. “Rest assured that we will be coming for you.”
