Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to address 9th Our Ocean conference in Athens, Greece

Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit will urge world leaders to implement climate-smart initiatives to preserve the ocean’s rich biodiversity when he addresses the 9th Our Ocean Conference, scheduled to take place from April 16-17, 2024, in Athens, Greece.

The Our Ocean Conference is being held under the theme, “Our Ocean-An Ocean of Potential,’ and will bring together heads of government, representatives of NGOs, and members of academia and civil society organizations to discuss effective approaches to protect the health of the world’s oceans.

The Conference will address the transition to a Blue Economy and threats to the marine environment such as biodiversity loss, climate change, unsustainable fishing practices, and marine pollution.

The Dominican leader will also deliver remarks at the opening ceremony of the 1st Our Ocean Film Festival, highlighting Dominica’s potential as a viable film and documentary destination.

In the Prime Minister’s absence from the state, Hon. Roland Royer, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy is serving as Ag. Prime Minister.

When it comes to global politics, visibility is everything. Currently, Mia Motley, Irfan Ali and Roosevelt Skerrit are the most highly visible Caribbean Heads of State.

Whether one likes them or loathes them individually or collectively, these regional leaders are unquestioned ambassadors and statepersons who command the global stage and have the ears of many.

Surely the most ardent detractors of PM Skerrit can find some possible value and global capital that can be extracted from the Dominican leader’s globetrotting assignments.

An important question for the casual or neutral observer is why would legimate international governmental entitities continue to promote and value a leader who is being vilified as a despot and tyrant in his country.

It is time to stop the undo vitriol already and ask “what can I do for my country” instead of what your country can do for you!!!

This man does not spend two consecutive weeks in Dominica. He goes globe trotting to diverse places as if to decompress from the economic, social and political complexities overwhelming Dominica.

He has traveled thousands of miles from his homeland to Greece only to read a five minute script prepared for him by some speech writer.

This is the squandering and wanton waste of taxpayers money. Instead of posting photos and write-ups of this spendthrift, why can’t the local media houses and journalists unearth how many millions/billions have been spent from the treasury on travel and per diem during Roosevelt present tenure as ruler of Dominica? Taxpayers have a right to know.
