Hugh James, a former prison officer in Antigua and Barbuda, with over 12 years of experience, was caught smuggling drugs into the penal facility where he once worked.
Upon his arrival at the Coronation Road facility for his scheduled shift, he was apprehended by a guard stationed at the gate who detected the odour of drugs emanating from him as he passed through the “red gate.”
Following a thorough search, drugs were discovered on James, leading to his subsequent arrest.
He appeared before the court on Monday, admitted to the crime, and was sentenced to two months in prison.
In a separate incident in 2021, Howard Segree, a former prison warden, faced charges for attempting to convey contraband into the prison, including cannabis valued at $423.
Segree was allegedly caught with the illicit substances, along with tobacco and wrapping paper, concealed in a Contigo cup during his entry into the facility on June 1 of that year.
His case is still pending before the court.
