Projected cable car completion date, 2026, says McIntyre

Cable car design

The construction of the world’s longest cable car which is ongoing in the Roseau Valley, is expected to be completed in 2026.

This was according to Parliamentary Representative of the Roseau Valley Constituency, Dr. Irving McIntyre while speaking on State-Owned Radio DBS.

The cable car will transport visitors up to the Boiling Lake.

“Hopefully in the next year we should see the Cable Car being completed,” he revealed. “Give or take, here and there maybe a month or two, might be little delays. Obviously, depending on the weather, because you know the weather patterns play a big part in how we can continue the program.”

According to Dr. McIntyre, this is going to be a major game changer in Dominica’s economy.

He said the project will be of great benefit for cruise ship visitors.

“A lot of the cruise ship visitors would not be able to get to the Boiling Lake, [however] with the cable car the opportunity to get to the Boiling Lake is accessible to them…,” he explained.

Dr. McIntyre continued, “In a short period, within 15 to 20 minutes you can be at the Boiling Lake site.”

He added, “So you can imagine all  [2000 to 4000] cruises coming in, they can get to the Boiling Lake.”

Moreover, he stated that this project will generate income not just in the Roseau Valley, but in the country as a whole.

“That in itself markets Dominica, because everyone who gets to the Boiling Lake will say that’s the longest cable car in the world, what a great experience as well as the Boiling Lake, the second largest Boiling Lake in the world,” Dr. McIntyre noted. “It’s really just the multiple effects of things that can come out from our cable car [and] we are really looking forward to this.”

Meanwhile, he explained persons can travel on the cable car to visit the Boiling Lake and can choose to hike to get back or hike to the Boiling Lake and use the cable car to return.

Dr. McIntyre said that there will be many restaurants along the way.

He said also that the tour guides, vendors, and restaurant owners will benefit tremendously.

Austrian ropeways and cable cars manufacturer, Doppelmayr Group has been contracted to build the 6.6-kilometre-long (4.1-mile) gondola/cable car project in the Roseau Valley, which upon completion is expected to be the longest in the world.

In an article posted on Dominica News Online (DNO) on March 1, 2023, The Associate Times reported that Outdoor Engineers, (a European company based in Switzerland) conducted a feasibility survey in Dominica, which revealed that the completion of the cable car project would result in a three-fold increase in the country’s tourism.

The 10-passenger detachable gondola would provide visitors with a “fast, reliable and comfortable means of visiting the national park in less than 20 minutes,’ according to the international website “Zenger” which first announced,  on August 29, 2022, that Doppelmayr had been hired to build the project by 2024.

Hospitality and shopping facilities focusing on the Caribbean island’s distinctive local features will be incorporated at the bottom station, according to the Austrian company.

The Austrian corporation’s website states that at the bottom station, there will be integrated hospitality and retail facilities emphasising Dominica’s unique local characteristics, while a café with a panoramic terrace, a viewing platform, and a six-meter (19-foot) statue of Dominica’s national bird, the Sisserou Parrot, will also be located near the top station.

This will go the same way as the hot steam they have been blowing on the mountain and still no electricity after 25 years.

Talks to bring geothermal energy to Dominica has been around for about 50 years, it was only talk. It was in 2011/2012 that exploration actually started when an Icelandic firm was given a contract to drill three wells in the laudat area…this project though nearing completion has been plagued with delays as a result of financial challenges and natural disasters….

I hope this project will actually improve our tourism. The last aerial tram closed down in 2012 because it wasn’t making money. Our tourist arrivals haven’t increased significantly since then.

Good question? Roosevelt and his regime are an unserious flock of parrots. These frequent talk about projects is just to gain favourable publicity in the local and regional press. That’s it!

@ibo France. the projects that are been spoken about can be seen, work is ongoing on the Arial Tram, geothermal, international airport, the east coast highway, the marina, the loubier to bagatell highway, housing projects in grandbay, Scotts head and elsewhere, about 4 new schools including the Goodwill secondary and the DGS….the list of ongoing projects is long but your hatred for one man has apparently rendered you blind deaf and dumb.

Tired of this expected to be completed like many others before that are now eyesore on the landscape.

@ibo France, as usual you are trying to fool people with your lies. Work on the geothermal and international airport is ongoing, completion dates for these projects have been published it will be another story if those dates are not met. The Roseau project has not yet started physically but finance has been secured for this project through the Saudi fund. The cruise ship facility is yet to start yet you are lying saying it is incomplete.

It’s not the longest. Why do they keep saying this? Its not true. The longest cable car in the world is and will still be in Vietnam – by a country mile, literally.

They are repeating this lie because a lie which is repeated many times and left unchallenged becomes ‘truth’.

That’s right. Not the longest cable car outright. Slight distinction: maybe they meant to say DA will be the longest strictly on land. The one in Vietnam traverses different islands and is over water. So its the longest sea crossing of that type.

    • February 14, 2025

It will be the longest when completed at 4.1 miles. Currently the longest Arial Tram in the world is in New Mexico USA, it is 2.7miles. The Arial Tram in Vietnam is the largest in the world in terms of passenger capacity, each car can hold up to 230 passengers, it is definitely not the longest.

incorrect. vietnam is the longest, not the busiest.

        February 15, 2025

Its a cable car, not an aerial tram and the longest is in Vietnam. The Dominica cable car will be about a kilometer shorter.
