Reports reaching Dominica News Online (DNO) indicate that two people have been shot in Salisbury as police bore down on the village this morning in an attempt to quell protest action by some of the residents.
According to the information, the village has been bombarded with teargas and at least two people were shot and injured.
DNO was told that one of those shot is a Haitian schoolboy.
The police have since confirmed that information to DNO.
Earlier this morning, the United Workers Party (UWP) candidate for Salisbury, Hector John, was on Facebook giving an account of the situation in the village at the time.
He appealed to Dominicans to go to the polls tomorrow and vote the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) government out “en masse.”
“Do something for your country right now,” John urged Dominicans. “Your children will blame you if you fail to act on their behalf.”
If the police action in Salisbury was to clear the road and keep it clear, why didn’t they tear gas and shoot the people on the road? If you know Salisbury, then you know that the road is a long way away from the village itself. Why send bullets and tear gas into the main village at a time of the morning when most of the people affected were SLEEPING, not protesting. This was a crime, an assault, and a warning to the people of Dominica as to how far this gov’t. will go to maintain power. Wake up people, the struggles have only just begun.
Have we forgotten, a few years ago a police officer was struck in the head by someone during a protest action at Salisbury?
Did we forget that he had to be airlifted for urgent medical attention?
My fellow Dominican the police had been exercising restraint until then when the people again began throwing rocks and other objects at the armed officers.
It appears that when protest actions are held at Salisbury the likelihood of violence is ever present……
I’ve said it before and I will say it again…. That the Evangelical leaders and churches should take full responsibility for what’s going on.
I think the PAWI organisation should review the credentials of some of its Pastors.
I listened to one Gospel mission pastor couple months ago on the radio and I knew, based on how he spoke that trouble was imminent. It’s sad, how can you all feel comfortable preaching to your congregation? How are you going to win the lost? Personally, I feel so much more Saved than the Pastors who I once looked up to. Sad that one Pastor has dragged his extended family into this and it seems that he will have to get them saved again. Or actually, are they backslidden? Your words are empty to me right now. At present there are protests actions going on in a few european countries. Have not heard of anyone getting shot or using teatgas.
It is a shame that people cannot voice their disgust without the entire caribbean heading to Dominica to do god knows what and the pappyshow police using unnecessary force.

It was about time the police showed some backbone and stop these acts of lawlessness by the UWP and their moronic supporters. If the police had stamped their authority on upholding law and order from day one of the campaign season, things would have been nice and peaceful by now and people would feel safe and secure going to their polling stations to cast their votes for the party of their choice. The police should also reflect on the message which they unwittingly gave to UWP supporters when they decided to march in Roseau for more money, in the middle of an election campaign. These violent UWP supporters must have concluded that was a signal to do what ever they want without the intervention of the Police. I hope that is a hard lesson learned and we can now see the Police doing what is expected of them. I also hope they are taking note of all those power hungry UWP operatives inciting these acts of violence and civil disorder in order to deal with them after the election.
I am a Dominican but in University 3 years now.. So my perspective on the crisis is based on news and social media.. Al Jeezera recently exposed some of skerrits’ secrets and personally, after looking at it I thought he would have stepped down but he said it was a lie and his supporters believed. Thats says ALOT about the current state their psychology.
Now, I don’t think I can wrap my mind around a leader who encourages this kind of behavior from his supporters, NO good is gonna come from this. We see riots on the media ALL the time, what good has come from it. First of all the leader has the police force on his side, he decides what’s right or wrong, so he’ll do as he see fit. The more intense they get, the more severe wounds incurred.
All this Red and Blue is really just separation. When I vote, I vote for who is gonna maintain an increasing and stable economy for my grandchildren and I’m just 23..

Where was Hector John when his supporters were blocking roads? Where was he when his supporters threw rocks at others? Where was Hector John when other Dominicans wanted to go to work only to head back home because the roads were blocked. Did Hector John realized that there were people heading to the hospital and were stuck? Did he even think of the inconvenience to other citizens including elderly and children the very group he is now trying to use? What is happening presently in Dominica reminds me of the book entitled Animal Farm by George Orwell. Those of you who are not familiar with the story try and acquaint yourself with it. It’s a good read. It will remind of Skerrit’s stewardship thus far.

Well honestly its very sad to hear of the Iinjured individuals. However the first question which naturally comes to mind is what were they doing in the protest zone. Another question is the security forces are only trained to shoot when it is absolutely necessary and especially if their own safety and life are threatened by the protesters. So we need to hear both sides of the full story before we can come to a final conclusion. On another note for months now and even up to last night the prime ministee have been pleading with these rioters to stop their illegal practices of blocking the roads and so on. Therefore I doubt they had adhered to his warnings otherwise there is no way this could have happened today. We can’t allow a minor bunch of unlawful people to hold our country hostage and bring our economy and daily business affairs to a complete halt. Therefore the security forces must act in the necessary and full measure requirend and needed in order to stop them once for all…
