JA’s Ramaal Lewis eager to display chops in inaugural Breakout League against Leeward Islands

Ramaal Lewis, the captain of the Jamaica Titans in the first-ever West Indies Breakout League, is determined to pursue the challenging path to victory, with the Titans set to kick off their season at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on April 26 against the Leeward Islands Thunder.

Cricket West Indies shared that as an off-spinning all-rounder who has previously led his country at junior levels, Lewis is relishing the opportunity to take this prominent role in a tournament aimed at supporting the growth of the region’s up-and-coming players. At 28 years old, he is eager to demonstrate his skills in this regional T20 format, said the statement.

Having captained the West Indies Under-19 team, Lewis has also had experience with the Guyana Harpy Eagles and is optimistic about the potential of the forthcoming tournament.

“I’m feeling excited and honoured to lead my country in the West Indies Breakout League because it gives the guys an opportunity to show the Caribbean and the world that there is a high level of talent in the region. This is a pathway for players to excel and create an avenue to play for the senior teams,” he remarked.

While the Jamaica Titans will depend heavily on Lewis and fellow Test cricketer Kirk McKenzie to lead the way, the team also includes a number of promising talents who could shine.

“We have a fast bowler, Govasta Edmond, who can really bowl with some gas. There is also the power hitting of Leroy Lugg at the top of the order. He has played for the senior Scorpions team and in the CPL for the St. Lucia Zouks before and he’s really looking forward to this tournament.”

Each of the six franchises in the CPL will pick three players from the Breakout League squads, creating a fantastic opportunity for participants to leverage this tournament as a launchpad for their T20 careers. Lewis is confident that the young athletes in the Jamaica squad will seize this chance, noting, “This gives an additional boost and incentive to the younger players, many of them grew up watching the CPL. There are three spots for players who do well in this Breakout League. So, you know everyone will be looking to grab one of those spots.”

With two seasons of experience in the Caribbean Premier League under his belt with the Jamaica Tallawahs, Lewis explains that this background has inspired him to perform exceptionally in the Breakout League and stay on the radar of CPL coaches.

“Having tasted the CPL already, that boosts me up to do well to get back into a CPL franchise because the atmosphere at CPL is so electric. I’m definitely looking to be one of the standout players in this league to get back into a CPL franchise,” stated Lewis.
