In what’s being seen as a loss to the academic community, Hugo St Clair Alleyne, a distinguished scholar from Dominica, has passed away at the age of 82. Alleyne, who was born in Dominica in 1942, made significant contributions to the fields of physics and space science during his illustrious career.
Alleyne’s academic journey began at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona, where he enrolled in 1961 to study Special Physics. He graduated in 1964 with 2nd Class Honors and went on to pursue postgraduate studies, ultimately earning a PhD in Physics. His research focused on periodic motions in the upper atmosphere, conducted jointly at the University of Sheffield in the UK and UWI.
A dedicated member of the UWI academic staff, Alleyne played a crucial role in the development of the Applied Physics Programme, particularly in Electronics. Alongside his academic pursuits, he was known for his passion for sports, being an avid cricketer and tennis player.
In his personal life, Alleyne was married to Suelan Lyn, the UWI Librarian responsible for the West Indian Collection, with whom he had two children, Sean and Matthew. Although he later joined the staff of Sheffield University, he remained closely connected to UWI, serving as the External Examiner for the MSc course in Digital Technology from 1999 to 2006.
At Sheffield, Alleyne made important strides in space science, eventually achieving the rank of Reader. He was recognized as the Principal Investigator for the Digital Wave Processor of the European Space Agency’s Cluster Project, which aims to investigate the magnetosphere and its impact on Earth’s environment.
Tragically, Alleyne’s promising career was hindered by a prolonged illness, during which he was surrounded by the support of his devoted wife. He passed away on October 28, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and dedication that touched colleagues and students alike.
Hugo St Clair Alleyne will be remembered not only for his academic achievements but also for his humble spirit and the lasting impact he made in the world of physics and space science. His commitment to education and research has paved the way for future generations of scholars.
Alleyne was the older brother of former Acting Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, Sir Brian Alleyne, and attorney Peter Alleyne.
Condolences to the Alleyne family on the passing of a very brilliant man who was humble about his achievements.
RIP sir and thanks for all you did while visiting this planet.
Sadly, few of our young scholars ever heard of this man who could have done so much for country until now. I know of a young man in the UK studying Astro Physics in the UK at a very prestigious school and can’t help but wonder if he ever heard of Mr. Allyne. It would be interesting to know if he did since to the best of my knowledge he has exceeded expectations coming from a small island state like Dominica.
Had we taken the time to give Mr. Allyne his flowers while he was still alive, I am certain a few of our people would have benefited somehow from his knowledge.
such a towering figure in the academic and scientific arena. Yet never heard of him in Dominican until now that he’s deceased. sincere condolences to the Alleyne family.
Thank you DNO for recognizing our dear Uncle Hugo and his contribution at this time of his passing.
He was an extremely loving, kind and intelligent man, very humble and always smiling!!
He will truly be missed!! May he rest in eternal peace!! ✌️
