The Discover Dominica Authority has announced an exclusive opportunity for local musicians to learn from internationally acclaimed jazz trumpeter Etienne Charles, who is scheduled to perform at the upcoming 14th annual Jazz ‘n Creole festival.

On Saturday, May 3, at 9 a.m., Charles will lead a master class at the Resource Center on the hill at One Mile in Portsmouth. The session is open to all musicians and will focus on wind instruments, keyboard, guitar, and percussion. Participants will have the chance to enhance their techniques and broaden their musical expression under the guidance of the renowned artist, who is celebrated for blending jazz with Afro-Caribbean influences.

This educational event underscores Discover Dominica Authority’s commitment to nurturing local talent and fostering the growth of Dominica’s vibrant music scene. Marva Williams, CEO of the authority, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “This master class is an essential part of the Jazz ‘n Creole experience. It strengthens our creative ecosystem by encouraging skills transfer and mentorship between global and local artists.”

Interested musicians are encouraged to register in advance via an online sign-up form at ibit.ly/HHzYP or by calling 767-265-3121.

The master class serves as a prelude to the main Jazz ‘n Creole festival, which will take place on Sunday, May 4, beginning at 2 p.m. at Cabrits National Park. The festival is a highlight of Dominica’s cultural calendar, renowned for its celebration of jazz, Creole rhythms, flavors, and cuisine set in a uniquely Dominican environment.

Great init, these are very important for our musicians. Would be great if we taught music in public schools like Guada & M’nique. These workshops did wonders for Reggae music after more and more local musicians in Jamaica got introduced to that calibre of musicians.

It is not only music that needs nurturing in our schools, but all aspects of the creative arts.
