Residents of Petite Soufriere and some parts of Castle Bruce may have to be relocated – PM Skerrit

Residents of Petite Soufrière and some parts of Castle Bruce may have to be relocated after massive landslides rocked these communities last weekend.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit visited the communities this week and said during a live interview with State-Owned DBS Radio  that discussions will be held on how the relocation plans will be executed.

On Sunday, November 6th major landslides occurred in the north east of the island due to a Trough System which left one man dead and some residents injured. Roads were also made impassable as a result of debris from the slides and homes as well as infrastructure were also greatly impacted.

“I recall many years ago I made a statement in Petite Soufrière, because we had major slides in Petite Soufrière some years ago and I had suggested that in the long run we need to look at relocating Petite Soufrière, and I think it reinforces in my mind and my conviction that we need to look at relocating Petite Soufriere,” Prime Minister Skerrit said.  “I will have a meeting with government officials to look at the planning and the execution of a comprehensive national plan to have the relocation of residents in Petite Soufriere and even some parts of Castle Bruce, we have to look at relocating because of the major shift.”

He revealed that the meeting is expected to be held on Thursday (November 10th) “and from 2023 we can start dealing with that movement very seriously and earnestly.”

According to the Prime Minister, since the incident, construction workers have been working tirelessly to clear roads.

He mentioned also that health officials have been with the people of Petite Soufrière and neighboring villages alongside the police to assist and rescue the injured.

He assured residents that his government will do everything in their power to respond to their challenges and to ensure that they are placed in a better position.

Furthermore, he stated the immediate action is to get the roads cleared, improve access in every village, restore utilities and the services and ensure that the residents are comforted with supplies they would need to manage their anxiety.

“We have the ODM coordinating and bringing in supplies to the villages of Castle Bruce, Good Hope, San Sauveur and Petite Soufrière with food supplies which will continue to come in,” he noted.

He noted further that in the past the issue of flooding wasn’t a major one in Dominica, however it has become a common issue because of the impacts of climate change.

Skerrit told Dominicans that they must understand that one of the greatest threats to the country is the impact of climate change, adding that “we are confronted with a war that we did not start.”

As a result of this reocurrence of devastation, Skerrit said that monies that would be used to build new infrastructure, the government has to put on hold ongoing projects to fix the damages and replace developments that have just been built because of these situations.

“We’re building the $127 million road project and that too is going to keep us back in terms of the speed at which we ought to have the roads resurfaced and this will also extend on unfortunately the discomfort of people,” he stated.

He commended the heavy equipment owners and operators for their hard work in clearing debris and their diligence for working during the night.

Meanwhile, during a meeting to reveal his new candidates held on Tuesday night on the Windsor Park Sports Stadium Forecourt, Skerrit expressed sincere condolences to relatives, neighbours and residents of the eastern villages of Dominica on the loss of a life, personal injury and damage to property and infrastructure occasioned by the passage of a Trough system over the weekend.

“My prayers are especially with the relatives of the deceased,” he sympathized. “And we commit to being there for their family in this hour of sadness and distress.”

And this other one: Manuel Noriega? Those same captors have been in Dominica since….Oops. They waiting for orders to get rolling. Make sure you have enough food and water for many days. We are embarking on a period in history where we have never been before. Supernatural and Evil forces are at work in Dominica. But the good people will be delivered. Mark every word. “It’s not by might, nor by power; but by my spirit sayeth the Lord. This Evil forces will be destroyed. And all those so called “preachers and pastors” who have gone along with this Ahab and Jezebel fuller System God will deal with. “Though it tarry, wait for it.” God is not asleep. The Bible says’ “He rules in the affairs of man.” So yes, God is the Mighty Ruler and deliverer.

This has very little to do with climate change but a lot to do with flawed civil engineering practice and in particular, the indiscriminate cutting of steep hillsides.

Can you imagine that things are so bad that Skerritt is talking about relocating residents yet on Sunday he barely mentioned the plight of the residents of the South East and went on to tell us his intentions to once again call elections in Dominca without the necessary reforms even if he had received a progress report from Dennis Byron that he’s nearly done with the job. Calling an election two and a half years before it’s due is more important to Skerritt than reassurance for the people who were suffering at the hands of climate change.
Haven’t we heard of Skerritt promising things which turn out to be pie in the sky following emergency disasters in the country? Recall the promise to build a bypass road to Canfield through Ravin Cork following slides under the Canefield cliffs? This is who Skerritt is, a liar and con artist who sees Dominca as his estate and he’ll just tell the field hands anything to appease them. Going to parliament is first step not grand announcements.

      Jonathan St Jean.
      When last were you here?
      Come visit asap
The place is transformed even after a hurricane like maria.
Under trying situations, Dominica has thrived.
Yes, we continue to face challenges like all is happening. Flooding was never heard of but now we see changing weather patterns.

I implore you to stop looking at things this way and calling the PM names. Look at everything at face value. Look at all the disastrous things happening objectively and look at solutions and suggestions.
Stop looking at the PM and party colors. Join in the campaign to develop this country. All hands are needed including yours. Be objective and remove the hurtful from your system. You all always play a blame game too.
Everything is “Skerrit”. This is not normal. Give right as right and wrong as wrong. Grow up and

I want to see a positive statement from you. Pretend that the PM does not exist. Ask for godly wisdom.

You are only hurting yourself by being bitter…

Yes, the state has been transformed. Skerrit is on his third Mansion and still no electoral reform. Now they are arresting people for threats they imagine even if no one is speaking to them directly and no one is arresting the criminals that threaten our livelihoods with extravagant electoral campaigns, No one is arresting people that create escrow accounts for CBI funds that never make it to the treasury. No one is arresting anyone for charging the state 64,000.00 dollars to live in a house built on their father-in-law’s land. One day, not too long from now the bubble will burst…

I sympathise with all the people who have been negatively impacted by the turbulent weather. Let’s hope that the victims of this rain storm will quickly regain some semblance of normalcy.

I don’t believe even ‘a’ or ‘the’ that comes from the mouth of this pathological fabricator. His record of bogus promises is legendary. For years he has lied about the airport, geothermal energy, the $4.2B missing from the CBI, the monthly $5B ghost international airport, etc.

It’s downright very scary to know the awesome wrath God could visit on a ruler and nation for his/her inequities. Karma is real.

Skerrit, surely in a climate resilient country, people would not need to be relocated after some rain? To me it looks like a whole bunch of BS your climate resilient country. I guess it’s only talk which serves you to lay your hands on climate resilient funds. I mean where is the money that Dominica received so far. Has it perhaps been invested in Morne Daniel? Furthermore, if you hadn’t called an election just now, you couldn’t care less about the affected people.

What an evil man you are Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. In this environment and these circumstances in Dominica today, you called an election that you could call anytime within the next two years and still win? How evil and unconscionable of you Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit:
“On Sunday, November 6th major landslides occurred in the north east of the island due to a Trough System which left one man dead and some residents injured. Roads were also made impassable as a result of debris from the slides and homes as well as infrastructure were also greatly impacted.”
While in Roseau the Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and his Labour party were having a jolly good election campaining moment! May God help the good people of Dominica and release them from the clutches of the evil one!

“you called an election that you could call anytime within the next two years and still win”

@Truth Be Told, what is your point in the above quote? What is the difference between now and “anytime” within the next 2 years?

“Now” is the time that the PM realizes the urgency of a General Election, so what is evil about him making that decision?

One again, I am asking, are you people thinking straight before you speak? And that definitely goes to that “11 people” at this point, who gave you the positive rating.

We really do have a “very poor thought” situation among the people Dominica, you see!.

The reason most people are afraid to fly is not because of the fear of actually flying, but the fear of an accident and dying as a result.

The research: “a new paper published in the journal Transportation Science found that flying on a commercial airplane is safer than ever. According to his findings, the current rate of death per passenger boarding is now ‘one per 7.9 million,’ compared to one per 2.7 million between 1998 and 2007, one per 750,000 between 1978 and 1987, and one per 350,000 between 1968 and 1977. ”

Looking at the statistics above, you can see how low the percentage of the probability of an accident.

And you got to your destination because you took a chance!

Change will not come without taking the same chance you took to put your life in the hands of a pilot on an aircraft, not knowing the future, to seek for a better life.
