The Grenadian government has temporarily halted public access to the Male Surgical Ward at Grenada’s General Hospital following a deadly shooting incident believed to be connected to gang-related violence in the area.
An article from caribbeannationalweekly.com, published on Wednesday, July 23, reports that the authorities announced that, “effective immediately,” all visits to the ward are suspended. This measure is part of enhanced security efforts aimed at safeguarding patients, staff, and the community.
The statement explained, “This proactive step has been implemented in response to recent safety concerns linked to suspected gang activity near the hospital.” It further stated that, “To ensure the safety of everyone, increased police patrols are in place, and visits to the Male Surgical Ward are temporarily discontinued.”
The report also highlighted that the decision follows a police-confirmed shooting that resulted in one fatality and injuries to four others.
The opposition party, the New National Party (NNP), responded to the incident by noting, “Another life has been lost to violence. An act that once shocked our conscience now risks becoming disturbingly routine. We extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this tragedy.”
Additionally, the article mentioned that as part of the security measures, visitors and patients may experience delays and undergo thorough screening procedures, including metal detector checks and bag searches.
It was also noted that a 24-hour armed police presence has been established at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department to enhance security.
Caribbean National Weekly further reported that hospital officials confirmed that alternative communication channels are being established to keep families informed about their loved ones’ health status despite the visitation restrictions.
Marva Primus-Joseph, Acting Director of Hospital Services, stated, “These precautions are essential to protect our staff, patients, and visitors.” She added that the hospital’s management “appreciates the patience, cooperation, and understanding of relatives, friends, and the public during this time.”
Currently, there is no specific timeline for when visitation to the ward will resume.
