Two National Guard members were wounded Wednesday in a targeted shooting near a metro station just blocks from the White House, officials said.
Mayor Muriel Bowser called it “a targeted shooting.” Witnesses reported gunfire and chaos as people fled. One suspect was shot and taken into custody with non‑life‑threatening injuries, according to law enforcement officials.
President Donald Trump ordered 500 additional Guard members to Washington following the attack. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said nearly 2,200 troops are already assigned to the city. Trump, in Florida for Thanksgiving, vowed the gunman “will pay a very steep price.”
Vice President JD Vance urged prayers for the wounded soldiers, calling the incident a reminder of the risks faced by service members.
The Guard has been deployed in Washington since August under Trump’s emergency order, with troops patrolling neighborhoods, transit hubs and public events.

Violence begets violence! Violence is being perpetrated on innocent people by ICE. All the violence must stop. The harassment, brutalization, wrongful arrest, illegal deportation of innocent people will attract negative reactions.
The situation of the officers getting injured is unfortunately regrettable. These officers have families also. No one wins in this situation.
