Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said Dominica has reiterated its call for the rule of law to be observed and for ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure Venezuela’s stability, good governance, democracy and peace.
His comment came following the capture of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores by the United States to have them face trial in the U.S. on allegations of international misconduct.
On January 3, 2026, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured and flown out of Venezuela following a large-scale US military strike on Caracas, US President Donald Trump announced in a social media post.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that Maduro has been indicted in New York on drugs and weapons charges. Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told a GOP senator that Maduro will stand trial in the United States and that he anticipates no further military action.
“Dominica has always firmly committed to the principles of international law, multilateralism, and the United Nations system, and has a long-standing respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and human dignity,” Skerrit stated during his first press conference for the New Year held on Monday. “Dominica reiterates its call for the rule of law to be observed and for ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure Venezuela’s stability, good governance, democracy and peace. Dominica remains steadied, ready to support all such efforts.”
He continued, “At this moment, our concern is for the well-being of the Venezuelan people. Political developments have real consequences for ordinary citizens, affecting social and economic stability and, in many instances, access to essential services.”
According to Skerrit, his government therefore encourages restraint and actions which prioritize peace and the protection of human life.
“We are also mindful of the practical and immediate effects that regional developments can have,” Skerrit stated.
In further responding to the capture of President Maduro and his wife, Skerrit told reporters that his government has no control over the matter.
“We hope that President Maduro is treated with respect and dignity and that he will be offered an [im]partial hearing…,” he said.
Meanwhile, he went on to state that on January 3, for example, in the immediate aftermath of military activity in Venezuela, there were disruptions to some flight schedules in the region, which inconvenienced persons traveling to Dominica.
Skerrit mentioned that flight operations have since returned to normal.
“Dominica is also attentive to the broader regional implications of instability. Our Caribbean region is closely interconnected through trade, energy cooperation, and migration,” he emphasized. “Developments in one country inevitably have ripple effects across neighbouring states.”
He said it is for this reason that his government places great value on regional dialogue and coordinated engagement.
“In this regard, Dominica continues to engage with our partners in CARICOM, and we will continue to support efforts to promote dialogue among stakeholders and encourage solutions based on mutual respect and international norms,” he noted.
Skerrit assured the people of Dominica that his government will continue to represent their interests with diligence and care.
The most UWP supporters can do is stay in the yard and run their mouth. They have been doing that for 25 years.Shameless and useless people who were KICKED out of office for corruption, victimization ,lies and greeeeeed.Boy you idiot, you have been parroting the same bs for years”Skerrit cannot go to America”.It is like you fell proud being a Don 🗝️.
Does any intelligent person still take Roosevelt serious? The man says anything to grab headlines. His words and his actions are light-years apart.
It is preferable to use the term KIDNAPPED when referring to the circumstances of President Maduro and his wife. When you guys say he was captured, you are implying that he was on the run from US forces who invaded his country. He was in his home when his guards were killed and he and his wife taken by force and flown to the US, all in breach of international law. Saying he was captured is somewhat normalising this criminal behaviour by despot Trump.
Great observation!
PR stunt to appease de US President
Dialogue and engagement, he also hopes that Maduro will be treated with respect and dignity, offered an impartial hearing.
Meanwhile, our Police released tear gas on a crowd at McMillan gas station. The rally wasn’t near Government Headquarters.
Skerrit wants to appear as a peace maker wi.
Trump is aware of our relationship with China and how our government treats peaceful protests.
Taking de opportunity to polish his image.
Maduro and Venezuela were friends of our government through ALBA…..Trump is aware of that too.
Making my observations………..no need to get hype
There is alot more that Trump is aware of….even Malik.
I will end here for now.
Yes Mr Liar.. you are concern about the Venezuelan people.. when they are going through rough times under Maduro all the time.. you don’t say anything…
Are you concern about Dominicans too..
Right now President Trump head is hot, so you better keep quite..
Roosevelt Skerrit’s remarks strike me as pragmatic rather than contradictory. At this moment, the priority is risk management, not ideological loyalty.
He has a long history of showing sympathy toward Venezuela and its leaders, but his choice of words this time feels intentional, cautious, yet not openly confrontational.
It’s a form of diplomatic hedging. Put simply, he isn’t backing down out of fear, nor is he grandstanding in defiance; he’s protecting Dominica.
It is clear that this comes at a time when ALBA’s influence is fading fast and U.S. enforcement power is growing stronger.
In conclusion, Skerrit is just aiming for carefully calibrated neutrality avoiding a direct clash with a superpower under the current circumstances.
This is how i see it!
And, this time, you are spot on.
what Prime Minister Honorable Roosevelt Skerrit did today during the Press Conference was commendable and of the highest level of Diplomatic reasoning.
The call for stability, good governance, democracy, and peace was commendable and our Prime Minister should be supported in pursuit of this.
I stand firm with Prime Minister Skerrit and pray for his continued good leadership and protection during 2026..
You are just another of Roosevelt behind kisser! What is so commendable about the rubbish he spews?
When Roosevelt rattles off his mouth in Dominica it is not heard any place outside of Dominica!
His stupid comments are made for local consumption by people like you.
Roosevelt do not have a single day training in diplomacy, his English vocabulary is horrible, which president of a superpower would low their standards to waste their time talking with a nobody who claims to be prime ministers over less than fifty thousand people?
Roosevelt is nothing more than a “want to be in things important!”
Dominica economy is at the top of the worst in the Caribbean he can’t Resolve that, how he is going to handle what is happening in Venezuela?
Who is Roosevelt Skerrit?
You need to shut up Roosevelt! You are irrelevant: keep in mind that people who live in glass houses should not throw rock-stones! Have you ever thought that you have offended the United States, and may eventually suffer the same fate?
Now that Dominicans might be completely declared persona non grata to the United States all due to you selling passports to undesirables to travel the world, don’t you think you could well be on the radar also?
You Roosevelt are one of world most corrupt politicians who to an extent bleeding Dominica, don’t you think that what happened in Venezuela could happen to you?
You keep trying to push your round head into a square hole looking recognition, talking nonsense: you want to be negotiator, if you think you are important; now that America is in control of Venezuela, negotiate the seeding of Bird island which is in Dominica territorial waters to the people of Dominica.
This is your opportunity to meditate!
why didnt you call for DEMOCRACY when he lost the last election and decided to hold on to power?
why you didnt call for peace when he was threatening to take half of guyana?
“He continued, “At this moment, our concern is for the well-being of the Venezuelan people. Political developments have real consequences for ordinary citizens, affecting social and economic stability and, in many instances, access to essential services.”….Hmmmm!
Ok, so we are all concerned about the very same citizens that voted your Comrade Maduro out and he refused to accept. You, Chichi were one of those congratulating him on a victory he never got. SHAMEFUL! Its funny that you did not DEMAND Maduro’s immediate release or threaten to arrest Trump on his next visit to Dca
. En-bon-dawwwww! Hypocrite! You next because Uncle Donald has his eyes fixated on you and Comrade Gaston.
By the way I thought you would have flown to the US for Maduro’s arraignment earlier today as a show of solidarity
. You and the so called Caricom leaders poopoo boiling
