Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit believes that the international community has not placed enough attention, as it relates to the present situation in Haiti.
He was speaking to reporters during a press conference held this week.
In recent weeks widespread violence has broken out in Haiti as armed gangs have taken control and called for the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
“The situation in Haiti is very serious and I believe that the international community has not placed the kind of seriousness and attention on Haiti that it has placed on other parts of the world,” he said.
According to him, Haiti needs help.
“There are some who have promised the help, but the help is not forthcoming,” Mr. Skerrit revealed.
He continued, “I understand that there are certain complications in Haiti in regards to the gangs and violence, no government institutions functioning and so forth, but where there is a will there’s a way.”
The Prime Minister said he believes there is not a deep-seated will, “and therefore we are unable to find a more direct path to assisting Haiti with its challenges”.
Furthermore, he stated that from a CARICOM standpoint, it seeks to lead the way in working with the Haitians to push them together to get them to understand that they need to define a Haitian-led solution to Haiti.
“What we have been doing is to provide the logistical support, the guidance, the encouragement of all of the actors in Haiti and we have met with all of the actors in Haiti, political leaders, church leaders, business community, civil society, former Prime Minister, former President, former ministers…we have met with them in Haiti,” he explained. “And so, this is the kind of support we’ve provided.”
He added, “I know the Haitians have been meeting among themselves as stakeholders to look at the possibility of establishing a transitional presidential council that would help pave the way for setting a date for election and ensuring that the conditions to host free and fair elections in Haiti is in place and the crisis can be put to an end…”
He said Prime Minister Ariel Henry has indicated that he will resign once the traditional presidential council is established.

As the chairman of CARICOM just recently, Roosevelt of carousing the international community and focusing the spotlight on the deteriorating conditions in Haiti. He squandered that opportunity and allowed the situation to exacerbate almost beyond repair.
His lamentation now about the heart-wrenching situation is nothing but crocodile tears.
