Sports minister says WIndsor Park lighting project back on track after ‘unavoidable’ delays

Senator Oscar George

Minister of State in the Ministry of Culture, Youth, Sports and Community Development, Senator Oscar George, has announced that the Windsor Park Sports Stadium Lighting Project is “moving ahead” following some unavoidable delays.

The $13.8 million project, financed through the Dominica Lotteries Commission, was expected to be completed in November 2025. However, delays relating to the arrival of the lighting structures had pushed the project back.

“As it relates to the stadium lighting, the project is moving ahead following some unavoidable delays,” he said. “As we speak, the foundations of the lighting towers have been poured, and I was advised that they require another two weeks to properly cure to be able to accommodate the massive weight from the lighting towers, which will be about 150 feet in height.”

George confirmed that the various components of the lighting towers themselves have arrived in Dominica from India, “and, of course, the various components have to be connected and [welded] together for each of the poles.”

He explained that this will be done while the foundations are being cured.

“And once this is done, the electrical aspects will commence, which include running of the respective cabling through the underground armoured cables, connecting all the various controlled rooms and, of course, the foundation, and up through each respective lighting tower to the lighting fixtures themselves.”

Meanwhile, George stated that the government has made a decision to engage as many young persons as possible in all aspects of the project, where they will be provided with hands-on practical knowledge and experience in implementing the installation of these lighting towers.

“Towards the end of that engagement, the intention is to absorb a few persons from that class to be engaged on this important project,” he explained.

He continued, “And of course, this is very important because what we want to do is to ensure that we can build the required capacity needed to maintain the system for years to come.”

Something tells me election time is near. This project which is at least 5 years old is on the move again. The airport project which is at lease 15 years old is on the move again. The etc etc etc projects which have all been talked about for however many years are all on the move again.

Just finish it! This is a government of empty promises and sweet lies.

The completion of the Windsor Park Sports Stadium lighting has been bandied about by this inept administration for multiple years, now it is being recycled once again for political expediency.

I always prefer something well done that well said. Complete the damn project and stop pontificating.
