The Forestry, Wildlife and National Parks Division, under the Ministry for Environment, Rural Modernization, Kalinago Upliftment, and Constituency Empowerment, joins the global community in celebrating World Biodiversity Day on May 22nd, 2025 under the theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.”
This year’s theme echoes Dominica’s longstanding commitment to conserving its rich biodiversity while advancing sustainable, climate-resilient development. As the “Nature Island of the Caribbean,” Dominica is home to a wealth of unique flora and fauna, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth.
Among our most iconic and treasured species are the Sisserou Parrot (Amazona imperialis), our national bird and a symbol of pride and resilience; the Red-necked Amazon or Jacko Parrot (Amazona arausiaca); the critically endangered Mountain Chicken Frog (Leptodactylus fallax); and the Lesser Antillean Iguana (Iguana delicatissima), all of which
serve as ambassadors for the island’s ecological integrity.
Dominica’s diverse ecosystems—from montane rainforests and cloud forests to coastal wetlands and marine reserves—form the backbone of our natural heritage and provide critical ecosystem services such as clean air, fresh water, food security, and protection from natural hazards.
In line with the theme, the Ministry continues to promote nature-based solutions as part of Dominica’s path toward climate resilience and sustainable development. Through initiatives like the Enhancing Climate Resilience of Roads and Communities projects, we integrate natural infrastructure such as forested slopes, riparian buffers, and restored watersheds to safeguard vulnerable communities while preserving biodiversity.
As we celebrate World Biodiversity Day, we urge every citizen and stakeholder to recognize the vital link between biodiversity, cultural heritage, and sustainable livelihoods. Conservation is not just the work of a few—it is a shared responsibility that requires collective action.
