STATEMENT: Ms. Isiuwa Iyahen, UN Women Head of Office on International Women’s Day

Ms. Isiuwa Iyahen, UN Women Head of Office (ad interim)

Good morning, everyone. I am pleased to bring greetings from the UN Women Multicountry Office Caribbean as we celebrate International Women’s Day 2026 under Dominica’s theme, Our Giving, Our Progress. Today, we honor the strength and generosity of women across Dominica, the work we see them do, and the work that too often goes unseen.

Across the world, women continue to do most of the unpaid care and domestic work, about three hours more per day than men. This includes caring for children, supporting older relatives, and keeping families and communities going. This work is essential, but it often limits women’s opportunity to study, to earn, and to lead.

Here in Dominica, we hear stories every day that show why change is needed. One mother shared that she must bring her toddler living with disabilities everywhere she goes, even to work, because she cannot afford childcare, and there are no services equipped to support his needs. Another single mother explained that when she goes to her part-time job, her older children must stay home from after-school activities to look after their younger siblings, because safe, affordable childcare simply doesn’t exist.

Today, Dominica is taking an important step to address these realities. Under the Build Back Equal project, which is funded in part by the Government of Canada, UN Women and the Government of Dominica are launching a pilot through the Labour Force Survey to measure how much time women and men spend on unpaid care work. This data will help shape better policies and ensure that both women’s and men’s contributions are fully recognized.

We are also launching a pilot under the Public Assistance Program that will give women access to childcare, skills training, financial literacy, psychosocial support, and other services that help build economic independence. These initiatives show a shared commitment to valuing women’s work, investing in their potential, and turning promises into real action. And in the words of the UN theme for International Women’s Day, rights, justice, action for all women and girls.

Together, let us continue building a Dominica where every woman and girl can thrive. Thank you.
