STATEMENT: UWP on gun violence in Dominica

The UWP Calls for Measures to Tackle the Rise of Gun Violence in Dominica Fellow Dominicans

1. It is with a heavy heart that I address you today on the alarming rise in gun violence that has shaken our beloved nation. To the families who have lost loved ones, to the communities living in fear, and to every citizen touched by this tragedy, I on behalf of the United Workers Party – Team Dominica extends deepest condolences and unwavering solidarity. No family should endure the pain of losing a loved one to senseless violence, and no child should grow up in the shadow of fear. Your grief is our grief, and your call for safety and justice is our shared mission.

2. This surge in gun violence is a stark reminder of the urgent challenges we face as a nation. While we mourn, we must also act with resolve to address the root causes fueling this crisis. Too many of our young people are caught in a cycle of despair, here economic hardship and lack of opportunity leave them vulnerable to the lure of violence. As a nation, we must do better for our youth. They are our future, and their potential must be nurtured, not lost to the streets.

3. As a Party in the Opposition, we call for a comprehensive approach to tackle this crisis and bring an immediate end to the pain and suffering, which have been caused. We must prioritize creating a vibrant economic environment that offers our young people meaningful opportunities for gainful employment. By investing in education, skills training, and job creation, we can empower our youth to build brighter futures, steering them away from the path of violence. We need policies that foster hope, provide purpose, and ensure that every young Dominican has a stake in our nation’s progress and development.

4. We also urge the government to strengthen community policing, enhance public safety measures, and work collaboratively with all stakeholders to address the proliferation of illegal firearms. Violence thrives where opportunity falters, and we cannot afford to delay action.

5. To the families grieving, we see you, we hear you, and we stand with you. Let us unite as a nation to honor those we have lost by building a safer, more prosperous Dominica for all. Together, we can forge a future where our youth choose hope over harm and where every citizen can live without fear.

Skerett lacked any credibility to lead our beautiful country. He will always remain docile.
The boy is a reactive and incompetent so called politician who feeds on the pulse of the people.
Dominican must get this boy out of office immediately because we’ve allowed our country to be lead by some brat.
DR Fountain can make all the recommendations he wants yet we all know nothing is going to happen because them people lack the know how.
Furthermore, All this talking by the other civil groups who wants to save Dominica is fruitless. Who is listening, when will change come?
We have heard the languages spoken by the so called ministers who behave like nursery children. They are brazen about their behaviour.
Dominica needs mature leadership and unfortunately we’ve not had that kind of leadership for the last two decades.
This has been a problem we’ve failed to deal with properly and is getting worse.
Any speech by this boy lacks persuasions.

The lawbreakers with the sophisticated guns and ammo should not be too difficult to find and brought before the court. Melissa knows all the soldiers, snipers and navy seals with the high powers arms are hiding.

Another minister declared that illegal entry was welcomed by her party through the backdoor, side-door and any which door.

That’s how a criminal enterprise thinks and behaves!

That’s the job of a responsible opposition.
In time like these, we need responible leaders. Clearly since 2004, the country has been in a steady mess, (socially, economically, criminally, etc), because of the poor governance of the incumbent party. Its clear as daylight, that the Skerrit led DLP is only interested in people at election time for their votes, but does not care a hoot about their safety, health, peace of mind etc.
I NEVER once saw Skerrit exhibit leadership in Dominica. His best shot at leadership has been to use the police to intimidate and create fear on a section of the society he does not like, and to spend MILLIONS of $$$$$ to see if he can jail them. What a shame! What a mockery of leadership! This guy is a gloater and a misleader folks,NOT a leader.
Work with him doctor Fontaine to see if together you all can reverse this dangerous escalation in gun related killings on island. Every life lost is one too many.
