UPDATE: Suspected drowning at Titou Gorge

Elias Dupuis was well known in Dominica

A young man has been confirmed dead following a drowning incident at Titou Gorge.

He has been identified as 37-year-old Elias Dupuis, originally from Bense.

According to Police Inspector, Davidson Cadette, on Monday, April 1, Dupuis left his home at Giraudel with his wife and female friend for Titou Gorge, in Laudat.

“Moments after entering the water, Elias appeared to be in distress and submerged,” he explained. “Assistance was sought from two male individuals who brought Elias to the banks OF the river where they administered CPR until personnel from the Fire and Ambulances Service arrived where they continued administering CPR in an effort to resuscitate Elias. He was then taken the Accident and Emergency Department of the Dominica China Friendship Hospital and examined by a medical doctor.”

He went to say that Dupuis was pronounced dead and a death card was issued in his name and his body was taken to the Lyndhurst Funeral Home pending a post mortem examination.

“The police would like to extend deepest condolences to the relatives and friends of the deceased Elias Dupuis of Bense,” Cadette said.

Dupius’ death has sent shock waves across Dominica since he was well known as an entrepreneur, photographer and media personality.

Many of those who knew him, and even those who did not know him personally, took to social media to express their shock and grief at his sudden demise.

“Omg I recently met his wife and she had so many nice things to say about him. That’s crazy! My condolences,” one person wrote on Facebook.

“Shocking. RIEP my brother. Condolences to the family,” another wrote.

“Great loss to so many……Lord give his dear wife and family the zeal and courage in this difficult time. A positive brother who gave so much and worked tirelessly. I m lost for words ……journey well my brother your legacy will live on,” yet another wrote.

Dupius worked at many companies in Dominica including a stint at DNO as a reporter and photographer under previous ownership.

The gorge needs ropes on both sides all throughout its length. When will we learn? how many more deaths? Forestry? Tourism? What all you to protect the lives of users of this facility and whats left of the good name of Dominica? Make our sites safer.

It was my understanding that life vests were required to swim in that area. Perhaps that information was incorrect.

I can’t believe that there are still stupid superstitious people in Dominica, so stupid talking about jumbie (zombie) drowning people!
They run their mouth off, meanwhile the place is so backwards: by now an autopsy should be conducted and the cause of his death should be made public; hence there would be no reason for this stupid superstition.
What is the temperature of pool?
Could it be he had a paralytic stroke, or heart attack the moment he entered the river?
People do get seizures which can render them powerless to help themselves!
If the Chinese quacks can’t find his cause of his death which could be of natural causes too;?maybe they should get someone from outside of Dominica to conduct an autopsy on the deceased!

I totally agree with you. I doubt Elias would go into titou gorge if he could not swim. It is public knowledge that he was diabetic and asthmatic he spoke about it on social media. I strongly believe he has some form of cramp, seizure or paralysis due to one of his ailments and the temperature of the water. This water is icy cold and we are still in the colder months of the year. I think his mom is a pathologist so she will get to the bottom of it. For the sake of our superstitious people I hope his cause of death will be revealed. He would want that because he was always ready to help people who suffered with his ailments. RIP wonderful soul! Hope his mom, wife and entire family finds peace. :-|

Very interesting comment, and so I sort of understand what may be the cause of his death. Before I continue ( I say to the idiot who think I have some sort of low self- esteem, perhaps it my low-self-esteem that caused me to be so bloody academically educated!) Frank N Stein, he is dead, and gone, I feel very sad: If he was a diabetic, and asthmatic, I am almost certain his medical condition may have contributed to his drowning. You seems to be knowledgeable, so if I mention a person inhale water or another liquid they may experience airway spasms and have difficulties breathing, as the muscles around the larynx spasm blocks the airways. It is more complicated than that anyway.
I am also a diabetic, been like that all of my life, I can tell you his glucose level may have drooped, meaning he went hypo; and when that happens the patient looses equilibrium, becomes disoriented, weak, and looses complete control of their body.
The resolve is to drink some fast acting carbohydrate!

You are quick to insult and call people stupid and fools. You must be a very ugly unsettled creature. If not ugly in face, which I think you are; then you are ugly within. A country boy.

You need to shut your stupid mouth; it is people like you with your backward thinking that warrants the insults!
If wisdom is silence, that makes you a fool, because wisdom is the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment; it is the quality of being wise: people learn from great old men and women who possesses wisdom!

Have you ever heard the term “listen to his words of wisdom?”
And let me put you in your damn place; my knowledge did derive from a smart phone; I am both college, and university academically educated: I am an electronic/electrical engineer by profession. I also majored in health science, and although I do not have a medical degree to practice medicine I most probably know as much medicine to save your miserable life!
And that’s who I am, and not as you wish to define me!
        Shut up, you idiot!
My name is: Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque; from out of the village of Wesley!

The gourge NEEDS safety ropes on BOTH sides all throughout the length of the gourge. This as absolute nonsense and carelessness on the part of the Min. of Tourism and the Forestry Division. How many deaths will it take for Dominicans to take Dominica seriously? Rest In Pease Elias.

Titou gorge is a nice place for tourist and locals but everyone going into the gorge has to know their limits. Wear the life jackets or tubes given if you are not a strong swimmer. It’s not about the people who own it, they have put things in place to minimize people drowning. It’s about each and every person being cautious. Don’t go there playing macho if you cannot swim. Sadly, this young man lost his life. I pray he knew Christ as his Lord and Savior. People take note. We are all one step behind him. Life is a vapor and it can be taken from us in a minute. We walk a very thin line between life and death so please get to know your creator before it’s too late. No one in our family comes back to say if hell or heaven is real but I believe it. And believing it is real or not doesn’t change the fact of what happens after we die. I would rather believe and get there and find out it’s not than to believe it’s not and find out it’s all true. May God comfort and strengthen the family.

I see the jumbie is very hard at work in Dca these days.

Time to re-evaluate the importance of Ti-Tou Gorge as an attraction for both visitors and nationals. Why has that place claimed so many lives over the years? Just maybe we need an exorcism ceremony up there by Fr. Lafleur. The souls lost in that place seem to always want another company. Its troubling indeed! Another troubling thing is the constant lost of our young men these days. To me it looks like Uncle Bazil and his son Feeyap are working overtime in our land.

RIEP young man! Condolences to family friends and all those who knew him.

Kinda strange to me. Just by entering the water he submerged and drowned? So many strange things are happening in this island some of these stories make no sense at all. Two gone in less than two weeks. Titou gorge must be deadly. On a more serious note, there are many who thinks that they are in “control” of their own life and that the reality of death is for others and not for them. So they they ridicule anything that pertains to God and the judgement after death. But death is an appointment which every one must face. So I sometimes take the opportunity to admonish people to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as their savior and not just as a mythical figure like Santa clause. God is real my dear brothers and sisters. If you live your life without God then don’t expect to be with Him in glory. “My sheep knows my voice and the follow me; and I give them eternal life.” This eternal life is only for the people of God. Sheep, because He is the Good Shepherd. Psalms 23. God loves you.

This is the most ill-timed, tone death, and inappropriate message to take your time to pen. Whatever your religious and spiritual journey, you’re in no position to dictate that of, and admonish others. Do you know of his relationship with his God? Your message is insensitive to say the least. Taking time to send a message of empathy and condolences in this time of sorrow would be the “Christian” thing to do.

I wished you had some limited childlike understanding before you responded to my post. I spoke in general and never mentioned the man’s name in anyway. So I don’t understand what you are driving at. I am not obliged to send any condolences and put the dead in heaven or hell as most of you do. I only responded to you because you are a lost soul who needs Jesus.

        • Just Sayin

You are absolutely correct, no one stated nor implied that you are obligated to extend condolences or assign a destination of heaven or hell to the deceased – I was taught that was God’s responsibility. However, in the midst of tragedy, a little empathy is what is called for, and the “Christian” thing to do, instead of getting on a sanctimonious soap box. Speaking in general under a post about a specific subject is far from general. Even in my juvenile capacity I see through your bogus claim of generality. Thank you for stepping off your podium next to Jesus Christ to grace me with your time and response. I’m honoured to be a ‘lost soul,’ because it means that I am in great company as every last one of Jesus’ apostles was a flawed soul. Furthermore the Bible states; “Lest no man boast that he is saved, except he sees the face of God.”

How you manage to determine that the person is a lost soul?
Are you not setting yourself up as some (god) in judgment over someone; when God, said in his words that “all have sin, and fall short of the glory of God.”
You don’t know I imagine what is the person relationship with God, we don’t know if you have a relationship with God!
Just because you speak of God does not mean you are a believing disciple of Jesus. For your information, there are people preaching every day, yet they do not believe in the almighty God.
Everybody have their own opinion when something happens: I don’t want to draw any conclusions nevertheless, if this man was less than 40 years old and diabetic, it is almost obvious that might be a contributing factor in his death.
My eldest son was hyperglycemic (diabetic) with hypotension, which damaged his heart.
In his late 40’s it killed him, it also damaged my heart, now I live with a pacemaker all because of diabetes.
God guarantees 70 years of living:…

Nature Isle. People like the forestry division refuse to put certain safety measures in place and improving facilities located in the world heritage area they think this goes against the guidelines. Meanwhile other world reserves worldwide have all the user safety measures in place to ensure minimal accidents.
