Telcommunications Minister, Chekira Lockhart visits ECTEL headquarters in St. Lucia

The Minister for Telecommunications, Honourable Chekira Lockhart-Hypolite, visited the team at the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL) in St. Lucia, in her role as the chairperson of ECTEL’s Council of Ministers. This significant visit aimed to engage with the staff, celebrate their achievements and address the challenges facing the evolving electronic communications sector.

During the meeting, ECTEL staff were encouraged to express their aspirations and to present their plans and strategies for navigating future challenges. Minister Lockhart-Hypolite expressed her support for the team, highlighting the dedication of the Council of Ministers. She also took the opportunity to inform the staff about the ongoing efforts in Dominica to advance the Electronic Communications Bill, a commitment shared by all ECTEL Contracting States. Local officials have indicated that this legislation will be addressed in the coming weeks.

Additionally, Gregory Shillingford, an ECTEL board member, was present and expressed his support for the new Managing Director, David Cox. After her engagement with ECTEL staff, Minister Lockhart-Hypolite made a courtesy visit to Honourable Stephenson King, Saint Lucia’s Minister responsible for Telecommunications. Their discussion focused on both the immediate and long-term outlook for the electronic communications industry in the region, as well as plans for future meetings and events.  Minister Lockhart-Hypolite’s term as chairperson will conclude in October.
