The Kalinago Council has secured a generous financial contribution from Seacology, a global nonprofit organization committed to safeguarding island ecosystems and cultural heritage. The council shared that this funding will support the enhancement and preservation of the Lescalier Tête Chien area — one of the most distinctive and culturally important natural sites within the Kalinago Territory.
According to the release, the initiative will involve establishing a visitor-friendly reception zone, adding informational signage, developing guided tour programs, and undertaking tree planting projects. In exchange, the Kalinago Council has pledged to protect and manage 65 acres of unspoiled coastal woodland, ensuring the conservation of local biodiversity and traditional customs for generations to come.
This collaboration follows a recent visit from Seacology’s Executive Director, Duane Silverstein, along with members of the organization’s team, who met with the Kalinago Council to explore avenues for sustainable growth and cultural safeguarding.
Chief Anette Thomas-Sanford expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support, stating: “This project represents a meaningful step towards protecting our natural heritage while creating sustainable economic opportunities for the Kalinago people especially the People of Sineku. We thank Seacology for believing in our vision and partnering with the Kalinago Council to safeguard both our land and our culture.”
Named after a legendary serpent from Kalinago myth, Lescalier Tête Chien is a geological and cultural jewel that attracts visitors from across Dominica and beyond. Through this initiative, the Kalinago Council says it seeks to improve the visitor experience while preserving the site’s ecological health and spiritual importance.
Seacology’s objectives closely resonate with the Kalinago Council’s dedication to sustainable development and environmental care.
“The grant ensures that the Lescalier Tête Chien project will not only protect vital coastal forest but also strengthen community-led tourism and conservation efforts,” concluded the release.

Kudos to the Kalinago Chief and Council for the underking. It’s a much needed initiative for the presentation and upliftment of this rich aspect of the Kalinago heritage and it’s people. May the initiative transformthe lives and livelihood of the Kalinago people and the people of Sineku in particular.
Once Anette Thomas-Sanford is in charge good things will happen for the Kalinago people and community. She is an astute leader who gets results. Her leadership is not shrouded in grotesque, partisan politics. Someday she will fit at the apex of government as the second female prime minister and restore integrity, industry and a comfortable standard of living for all Dominicans regardless of one’s political leanings.
