Dominican Olympian Thea Lafond-Gadson will be among individuals who will be honored by the American Foundation for The University of the West Indies (AFUWI) at its 28th annual scholarship fund-raising gala next month.

The event will be held under the theme ‘The Legacy Continues’ and is scheduled for Friday, April 4, 2025, in Manhattan, New York City.

According to AFUWI, it will “honor remarkable individuals and organizations whose leadership, charitable efforts, and accomplishments have profoundly influenced the Caribbean, the United States, and other regions.”

The awardees will also be recognized for exceptional contributions to their communities or industries, as well as setting extraordinary standards in performance, ethics, outreach, and service that are both recognized and emulated.

Lafond-Gadson will be an honored guest at the ceremony and will receive the Salute to Caribbean Gold Award.

“She will be recognized for her amazing performances at the 2024 Paris Olympics,” AFUWI said.

“Her gold medal win in the women’s triple jump is the first for her home island of Dominica in Olympic history. This achievement has brought great pride and inspiration to the Caribbean region.”
