As of Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Dominica’s Cabinet gave the green light to establish thirty-four (34) permanent Public Health Aide positions within the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services. These roles will be classified at Level II and are part of the government’s ongoing strategy to bolster primary healthcare and community-based services, explained a press release from the secretariat.
The Cabinet also approved an annual budget allocation of $702,836.10 for Primary Health Care to support these new positions. Additionally, all temporary and contracted Public Health Aides are to be transitioned into permanent roles, subject to the usual recruitment procedures and verification processes.
This move reportedly aims to enhance the resilience of the health system, improve staff retention and ensure continuity of care. It also seeks to boost accountability and performance management, while increasing administrative efficiency by removing the need for repeated contract renewals and ongoing Cabinet approvals, says the release.
This initiative follows a decision made in May 2025, when the government approved the regularisation of over eighty (80) long-serving non-established workers across the public service.
The government states that this current measure represents its “continued commitment to modernising and stabilising the public sector workforce.”
