The languages of Kalinago, Kwéyòl, and Kokoy from Dominica will be highlighted during the 11th Annual E.O. LeBlanc Memorial Lecture, organized by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Global Campus Dominica in collaboration with the Division of Culture.
This event is scheduled for Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. in the UWI Auditorium. The panel for this year includes: Mr. Prosper Paris, discussing “Mabricka! The impact of the Kalinago on language in Dominica and the Caribbean”, Mr. Raymond Lawrence and Mrs. Ophelia Marie, presenting “Pa asé pou yo: The development of Dominica’s Kwéyòl language”, Mr. Emanuel Prince, addressing “A Fuh A Wi: The role of Kokoy in Dominica’s cultural landscape.”
Dr. Kimone Joseph, Head of UWI Global Campus, Dominica, notes, “In recent years, the theme of Dominica’s History Week during Independence Celebrations is reflected in the theme of the E.O. LeBlanc Memorial Lecture. And this
year is no different. We will seek to explore the influence of three of Dominica’s native languages: Kalinago, Kwéyòl and Kokoy on our culture. Of course, each one has its own unique and rich history. Yet, what makes it most interesting is
that they, like us, blend to form expression and a heritage that is truly Dominican.”
The E.O. LeBlanc Memorial Lecture series is part of the National Independence Calendar, emphasizing cultural themes to honor the contributions of Edward Oliver Le Blanc, the first Premier of Dominica, who was passionate about culture and was known for his love of reading and poetry.
