Cassava is a popular Dominican produce, especially amongst the indigenous Kalinago people, who have historically incorporated the tuber into their culture and diet. This year, a uniquely crafted Cassava House is one of the main attractions of the third edition of Ti Vilaj Kweyol, held under the theme “Tout Biten Domnik” at the Botanic Gardens from October 21 to 24, 2024.
Cassava is considered the second most important source of starch in the world and is a critical industrial crop in many tropical and subtropical areas. Cassava starch, also known as tapioca, has numerous uses. The aim of the Cassava House is to highlight the versatility and various applications of cassava, including items used in its preparation, and demonstrations of cassava delicacies.
On display in the Cassava House are farine, vodka made from cassava, a cassava grater, a cassava strainer, a copper pot (capa), cassava plants, and cassava tubers. Last year, the coconut was featured at Ti Vilaj Kweyol, showcasing a variety of coconut items that complemented the Coconut House.
