The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) advises the general public that the Fond Cole landfill will not be accepting tires, metals and white goods until August.
This was according to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the DSWMC Rhoda St John during a statement this week.
This decision was made due to a fire that started at the Fond Cole Landfill on Monday, June 30, and resulted in thick smoke covering some areas in the community and its surroundings.
“White goods generally refer to large household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, stoves, ovens, dishwashers, air conditioners, water heaters,” she explained.
She continued, “Grass waste and wood will not be accepted this week until further notice.”
Only general waste is accepted at the landfill at this moment.
“Continue to manage your waste effectively,” St John encouraged.
this seems like the management of solid waste has been overwhelmed by the task of managing and operating the landfill… this is sad and requires attention.
Ugh, this is such a hassle! No tires or metals accepted at the landfill until August? What are we supposed to do with all that junk in the meantime?
More refuse dumped in empty lots as householders become desperate. Where there is no vision combined with a lack of planning, the people perish.
