Tropical Storm Erin approaches Northern Leeward Islands; weather system to affect Southern Lesser Antilles

Tropical Storm Erin is steadily advancing across the Atlantic and is expected to approach the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend. As of 5:00 PM local time, the storm’s center was located near latitude 16.3° North and longitude 45.0° West, approximately 1,200 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands. Erin is moving westward at 17 mph, with a shift toward the west-northwest anticipated beginning Thursday night and continuing into the weekend.

Maximum sustained winds are currently near 45 mph, with higher gusts. Forecast models indicate that Erin may strengthen into a hurricane by Friday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the storm’s center. Residents across the Lesser Antilles are advised to monitor updates closely as the system progresses.

Meanwhile, a weak trough is expected to affect the southern portion of the island chain over the next 24 hours. This system will bring increased moisture, resulting in occasional cloudy skies, scattered showers, and a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms.

A reduction in Saharan dust concentration is forecast, though individuals with respiratory conditions are encouraged to continue taking health precautions.

Mariners are advised to carry navigation equipment due to changing sea conditions. Along the west coast, seas are expected to be slight to moderate, with wave heights reaching up to 3 feet. On the east coast, conditions will be more intense, with moderate seas and waves rising as high as 7 feet.

Authorities urge residents and mariners throughout the region to remain vigilant and stay informed through official weather updates.
