Tropical Storm Warning discontinued for Dominica; work resumes but schools remain closed.
A Tropical Storm Warning for Dominica has been discontinued effective 5:00 am on Friday. This as TS Bret makes it way into the Caribbean Sea after crossing the Lesser Antilles overnight. However, a Flood Watch remains in effect.
Normal work day resumes on Friday but schools remain closed. Scheduled CXC exams slated for Friday will proceed.
At 5:00 am, the center of Bret was located about 174 miles south-west of Dominica in the Caribbean Sea.
The Dominica Meteorological Service said early Friday that tropical storm force winds are not expected in Dominica as Bret moves away from the islands but gusty winds and near tropical storm force winds are expected to persist through the morning, mainly over the southern half of the island.
“Pockets of enhanced clouds which could result in moderate to heavy showers continue to linger to the east of the island,” the service stated.
“This could result in localized flooding events, mainly in the eastern and northern sections of Dominica. A flood watch is recommended.”
The following conditions are expected:
-Occasional gust to near tropical storm gusts
-Pockets of intense shower and thunderstorm activity with 100 to 150mm/4 to 6 inches of rainfall or greater in higher elevations
Impacts expected:
-Rivers, streams, gutters and ravines may overflow their banks and flooding surround areas , roads
and bridges
-Landslides and rockfalls from overhanging cliffs and hillsides
-People living near to or traversing eastern coastal areas will be impacted by life threatening surf and dangerous rip currents
“Residents should continue to monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Bret and stay safe,” the service stated.
The Tropical Storm Warning has been discontinued for Dominica as of 5 am, by The Government of Dominica.
