Twelve (12) charitable organizations across Dominica received monetary donations made possible by the Dominica Social Security (DSS) on Thursday. The donations ranged in the amounts of $1000 to $5000, totaling $26,000.
The organizations include; CHANCES, the Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities (DAPD), CALLS, the centre where adolescents learn to love and serve, Dominica Dementia Foundation, The Dominica Infirmary, The Education Trust Fund, Grotto Home for the Homeless (Community Hostel Inc.), House of Hope, Mahaut Senior Citizens Home, Northern District Home for the Aged, St Jerome’s Ministry of Grandbay and The Social Centre Model Preschool. These organizations/ institutions all cater to the needs of the less fortunate and underprivileged ones among us.

“Over the course of the last several years, the Dominica Social Security has been making those donations in support of the work [of] a number of charitable organizations. In keeping with the Board’s policy of allocation, a percentage of its annual administrative budget [is] for that specific purpose,” Executive Director of the DSS, Janice Jean-Jacques Thomas said while delivering remarks at the presentation ceremony held at the DSS Board Room.
She continued, “As we should know by now, the Dominica Social Security exists to serve as a safety net providing relief in the form of cash benefits to insured persons and their dependents in times of economic hardships brought about by such events as illness, pregnancy, accidental injury, disability, old age, and death.”
According to her, by the mere fulfilment of the noble mandate the DSS is already making a significant contribution to the socio-economic well-being of the nation. At the same time, Jean-Jacques Thomas said the company is mindful that as a good corporate citizen, “we do have a moral responsibility and social conscience.”
Furthermore, she noted that the DSS support to these recipient organizations is indicative of its recognition of the tremendous difference that they seek to make in the lives of their various groups. She expressed hope that these organizations and institutions will continue to find the impetus to fulfil the respective roles that have been either entrusted to them or to pursue the causes to which they have committed themselves.
Jean-Jacques Thomas also extolled the beneficiaries to continue to persevere in their various fields of endeavours and to never give up despite the challenges. Meanwhile, Jean-Jacques Thomas sounded a call to the employers who continue to fail to meet their obligations to social security, “…who continue to deny their employees of the benefits that are provided by social security, and to the self-employed persons who refuse to contribute to social security.”
