Caribbean journalists play a vital role in driving progress towards equality, economic growth, and environmental sustainability across the region, says the UN.

According to a press release from the organization, the work of the media is instrumental in enhancing the quality of life and opportunities for citizens from all backgrounds.

In line with this shared vision, the United Nations Office in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean shared that it aims to endorse ongoing efforts to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As part of this initiative,  it supports the introduction of a new accolade—the SDG Champion Award—featured during the Caribbean Broadcasting Union’s (CBU) annual Media Awards.

This award will honor exceptional media work across various platforms—including print, radio, television, and digital media—that highlights the SDGs, which serve as a global blueprint for peace and prosperity. Dominica is eligible for entries as well as Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, , Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The United Nations explained that it will recognize four categories within this award, each encouraging submissions that motivate action on the SDGs and resonate with national development priorities. Content submitted in radio, print, television, or online formats should aim to connect the Goals to everyday lives, effectively communicate complex issues like climate change or inequality using straightforward language, and promote active engagement with the SDGs. Whenever feasible, submissions should be data-informed and focused on practical solutions.

“The media continues to be a valuable partner to us. We see this initiative as a continuation of our solid partnership, which we hope to strengthen by celebrating journalistic excellence that educates communities, drives sustainable development and inspires meaningful action. Our goal is to support Caribbean countries in advancing progress on the global goals,” said Simon Springett, the UN Resident Coordinator.

Anthony Greene, President of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, remarking, “partnering with the UN Sub-regional Team for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean in the critical area of the SDG’s aligns well with the CBU’s mandate and identity as a contributor to regional development from a media and communications perspective.”

Entries for the 37th edition of the CBU Media Awards opened in late November 2025 and will close at midnight (ECT) on February 28, 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be announced in May 2026, with the award ceremony scheduled for August 2026.
