President of the Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT) Mervin Alexander urges teachers on the island to unite as one body, identifying unity as a fundamental driver in vocational development.
He made the call while addressing the DAT’s 23rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the St Alphonsus Parish Hall recently.
Alexander emphasized that he became who he is today because of what he experienced during the early days of teaching.
“Unity is strength my dear people,” he said. “I am who I am today because when I came into the teaching service there was a lot of unity amongst teachers and principals. And I am not talking about only in the schools, but throughout the island, so it made us who we are today”
Contrasting his era with current times, Alexander continued, “I am not sure how many young teachers now can really say that they are growing because their staff is very united or their principals are very supportive of them.”
According to the DAT head, sharing knowledge precipitates from a mindset of unity versus a selfish approach. The results, he contends are beneficial to the individual and the collective.
“So, we should not be selfish,” he urged. “Let us share our knowledge with each other and that way we will achieve, we will succeed and we will move forward.”
