“We relied heavily on circumstantial evidence and ultimately the jury I presumed would have agreed with all the evidence we would have brought in convicting the accused.” This was according to State Attorney Daina Matthew during an interview with the media on Wednesday, shortly after a nine-member jury found Samron Thomas of Montin, Grand Bay guilty of the murder of Damien Ernest of Kingshill.
“I believe it was indeed circumstantial evidence,” she said.
According to Attorney Matthew, sometimes persons may believe that direct evidence is required to prove a matter, however, she stated, “…when you have one strand, two strands, five strands linking to a person’s guilt it becomes almost difficult to not find them guilty.”
Furthermore, she said the aim is to not only secure convictions, but to always ensure that justice is maintained.
“And I will say at least today we were able to do both,” Attorney Matthew stated.
Thomas, along with Marvin Marlon Albert of Grand Coulibri, were arrested and charged with the murder of Ernest in 2020. Albert, who had pleaded guilty last month to the murder is expected to be sentenced this month, while Thomas will be sentenced following a social inquiry report.
Police reported that the body of Ernest was found at about 11 AM on Saturday, June 27, 2020, on the road near the Boeri Lake lying face down with multiple gunshot wounds to his body.
He was taken to the Casualty Department of the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) where the body was pronounced dead.
Thomas was represented by attorney-at-law, Wayne Norde.
