The new U.S. Ambassador to Haiti, Henry Wooster, has returned to Port-au-Prince, expressing his mission to bolster the partnership between the United States and Haiti during what he says is a pivotal period for the country. Having previously served in Haiti from 1998 to 2000, Wooster says he brings both experience and personal connection to his current role as Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy.

In his inaugural address to the Haitian people, Wooster expressed his enthusiasm for returning to a country he fondly remembers. “I am very pleased to be returning to Port-au-Prince. I previously served in Haiti from 1998 to 2000, and my family and I enjoyed our time here, from the Konpa music and beaches to the country’s rich history and delicious cuisine,” he shared.

His message underscored the importance of strengthening bilateral relations amid Haiti’s ongoing challenges. “I am honored to return to Haiti and lead the U.S. Embassy at such a crucial time. I will work with the Haitian people to strengthen the relationship between our two countries and address the complex challenges we face.”

A significant portion of Wooster’s address focused on security concerns. Recognizing the persistent threat posed by criminal gangs, he emphasized that tackling this issue is a top priority. “In these unprecedented times, our priority is to address the security situation. For far too long, criminal gangs have used violence to terrorize Haiti for their own personal gain at the expense of ordinary Haitians,” he stated.

Looking ahead, Wooster pledged international support to aid Haitian efforts in restoring safety and stability. “Together with Haitians and the international community, we will address the security crisis and strengthen international support for the Haitian National Police and the Multinational Security Support Mission,” he affirmed.

Throughout his speech, the ambassador highlighted the importance of listening to the Haitian people. “I want to hear your voices, your ideas, and your hopes for the future. The Embassy is here to collaborate with Haitians and our partners to build a safer and stronger Haiti. We believe in Haiti’s potential.”

Ending with a proverb that resonates deeply within Haitian culture, Wooster expressed optimism and solidarity: “Men anpil, chay pa lou !” — a reminder that collective effort can ease burdens and achieve great things.

Meanwhile, A US Department of State release issued in May, said about Wooster’s appointment : “Ambassador Wooster has had a long and distinguished career, including service at Embassy Port au Prince, as Ambassador to Jordan, and in the U.S. Army.  Given his extensive background in Washington and his proven leadership record overseas, he is the right person to lead this mission at a critical time.”
