The UWI Seismic Research Center (SRC) is reporting that it recorded a burst of volcanic earthquakes beneath Dominica on Tuesday morning.
It said the quakes began at around 12:45 AM and as of 7:30 AM 345 were recorded.
“Some of these events were sufficiently large to be felt but were smaller than magnitude 3.5 which is below the threshold for posting to the SRC’s social media platforms,” the organization said in a statement on Tuesday morning.
It stated that since 7:30 AM the rate of the quakes has decreased.
“The Seismic Research Center is continuing to monitor the activity and provide ODM-Office of Disaster Management, Dominica with regular updates,” it said.
Based on social media postings, it appears the quakes were felt in mostly the northern parts of Dominica.
“Felt it in Thibaud,” one person wrote.
Another wrote, “Yes, strong in Portsmouth,” while another stated it was the same in Toucari.
“Very strong in Savanne Paille,” yet another person revealed.
Dominica News Online contacted the Office of Disaster Management for a statement on the matter but was unsuccessful.
