UWP election court challenge moving ahead; supporters urged to assist

UWP president, Isaac Baptiste. File photo

The United Workers Party (UWP) is well on its way to filing election petitions challenging the outcome of the December 6, 2019, general elections in Dominica.

UWP president, Issac Baptiste said they are progressing with preparations to have the petitions filed within the next 21 days provided for under the law.

The United Workers Party has maintained that there were voting irregularities during the elections which the Dominica Labour Paty (DLP) won by a margin of 15 seats (18-3) and have accused the DLP of stealing the elections.

In a recent radio interview, Baptiste called on UWP supporters to assist with the battle ahead.

He said his party will need financing to meet the cost of the challenge that they are going to take to the judiciary.

“You can make your contribution either through the UWP website, through your candidate at the various constituencies; in a party office you can also do that,” Baptiste said. “Soon we might have a radiothon to raise funds but, most importantly, we have our membership cards.”

He said persons can purchase a membership card or renew theirs for $EC5.

The UWP official said he is certain that if the 16,000 persons who voted for the UWP purchase their membership cards, this bring in some funds to compensate the attorneys who will be working on the matter.

Baptiste said further that the UWP believes that the institutions of the state – the President of Dominica and the Electoral Commission did not facilitate a free and fair election adding that it is an “established fact” that the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) under the leadership of Roosevelt Skerrit seemed to have perfected the art of “stealing elections”.

He contends that because of what they have witnessed in the 2019 general elections, their position on electoral reform must be reviewed.

Prime Minister Skerrit hs promised to initiate the process of electoral reform within the first 100 days of his new administration. He said recently that former CCJ president Sir Denis Byron has accepted his invitation to perform the role of a one-man commission in this process.

Skerrit has also urged the UWP to fully engage in the electoral reform process and implored them to put the “destructive rancour and revolt” behind them, pointing out that all the observers, “including your friends, have pronounced the elections of Dominica free and fair.”

“Nehemiah was devastated when he heard the wall of Jerusalem was broken down and burned. He wept and mourned for Jerusalem. Something happened inside of him, he knew something had to be done. He knew that it was not God’s ultimate plan that Jerusalem be in ruins. He got permission from Araxerxes to rebuild the walls of the devastated city.” The wall was completed amidst all the discouragements of the public. Dominica needs a WALL. A wall of electoral reform, ID cards, proof of citizenship outside of CARICOM trespassers and invaders. If you truly love your country, then stand up for justice and free elections. I stayed away from these online stuff, but I saw too much injustice taking place. The night before the 2019 elections I didn’t and couldn’t sleep. Same thing the following night and I had a very strange sad feeling about Dominica. God only knows how I felt. There will be deliverance for Dominica and I have not doubt.

You are the UWP president so stand up for the right, don’t give up the fight. We need checks and balances in our gov ernment; If in fact we have one. “Government is by the people (not by those who are living sweet abroad and flying in just to taint our election) of the people, and for the people.” For the people and not for a particular party. I wonder what was the reactions of the thousands of Haitians who voted in our elections after a result came in!

You asking your supports to cough up their hard earn cash to line the pockets of your lawyers, if you guys are really looking out the country and the interest of the ppl, shouldn’t your lawyers do this without taking money from us? That just goes to show that u guys are just concerned about your pockets, you don’t care about the people and the country, you want to get into office to enrich yourselves. I feel sorry for the few misguided souls who are going to donate monies to you for you to give to ur lawyers.

You guy have a poor record in the courts, yet you keep coming back to the well asking hard working people to give more cash to make lawyers rich. Give the courts a rest. In as much as I think Skerrit and his gang are correct, I would not give you a cent to take that case to court.

You see those two Bible names “Isaac Baptist”, boss the way those so called servants of God and Christians behaved during the election they even caused my faith to be weak. Forget about Joseph Isaac we call Judas because even though he has Bible names I already knew he was a greedy person. But to see how is pastors, bishop, priests, preachers that supporting evil and taking the lead to promote Skerries corruption? I mean Skerrit violated everything in the Bible the church once preached be it “by the sweat of the brow…” the sanity of marriage where the man is head of his home, “thou shall not steal” “godliness exalts a nation,…” Now it seems that is UNGODLINESS that exalts a nation and righteousness is a reproach based on the behaviour of church people since they so deeply involved in the evil of Skerrit. I think this country is Very sick and I am sorry Isaac Baptist, the court will change nothing. It’s an evil country where wrong is right and right is wrong so don’t…

My problem with the UWP is they give people the impression that Dominica is a real country where the rule of law and our Constitution is in tack. My party, according to Skerrit Da is NOT a real country and our laws and Constitution CANNOT stop Roosevelt Skerrit Alibaba! This is a country that is corrupt to the core and morality & godliness means nothing now! How do you expect to get justice from the court when we already know Skerrit owns the Court, the president, the police, the media and even the religious leaders like the bishop, priests, Evangelist, pastors and all groups one would expect to turn to for help? Sadly, the state of Dominica today is no different from how the earth was in Gen 6:12 “God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.” Folks, it was because of that we read of the flood of Noah. Not only have our religious leaders accepted bribe but they too carried bribe envelopes. So think Court will help us

I am reading this thing and I am embarrassed for them. If you cannot afford to buy a car my advice is take the bus. How as a party can you ask your supporters to finance a court case you know you cannot win. What is really going through your head as a leader? Instead of advising your supporters to block roads and destroy Dominica you should have been thinking of ways to raise funds. Instead of paying Haitians to block roads in Salisbury you should have save that money nonsense. I am disgusted by the UWP politics and the way they try to use Dominicans. You guys are way to disorganized and disfuntional. Linton said for the world to hear “no one is helping us” God help those who help themselves.

Bapyiste, that is supporters abuse. Why every time is the supporters of the UWP that have to foot the party’s court bills? Where is all the monies Lennox raised in the US?
What sense does it make when you know that’s another loosing case for the UWP.
This morning you were on Matt show and you said if the UWP HAD WIN THE ELECTION there would be blood shed.
Sir according to your statement, are you not admitting that the DLP won the election?
So what really is your point of going to the court?

    • December 24, 2019

“if the UWP HAD WIN THE ELECTION there would be bloodshed”

Kid, did Lennox actually say that? And his followers were the ones who started up the way of bloodshed weeks before the elections.

He was the one who told the President that the coming days would be very interesting and he said that the election would definitely bring civil unrest–because he knew that he and his party could not win.

The only reason there was no war after the election was because PM Skerrit called for protection for his people of Dominica. Lennox was too foolish to know that the Prime Minister would do that

But what made him think the UWP could and will ever win any general election in D/ca under his leadership?

Right now, instead of them accepting their loss and to move on with stern plans to show the people that they are going to take the “driver’s seat” they are begging their followers to pay for a court case which they can never win. When will they ever learn?

    • December 24, 2019

@RastarMarn, how foolish! Where is PM Skerrit going to go down to, and we, the people, are the ones keeping him up; because his work is to our satisfaction, and we love him. Go down to where? Stuuuuuupes man!

  18. December 23, 2019

“You can make your contribution either through the UWP website, through your candidate at the various constituencies; in a party office you can also do that,” Baptiste said”.

While you complain that PM Skerrit is giving to his followers to win his Title, you asking your followers to give to you, which always gives you the loss. How can you do that?

People who challenge someone in court must be prepared to take the bill; now you are saying that you don’t have the financial resource, which is needed to take the DLP to court; if it is not from your followers and radiothon. What if you don’t win the case; which my insight has shown me that you are heading for another dreadful defeat

If I were you I would not put this one on the media for the World to read, nuh!

        December 24, 2019

Dr Shillingford you and other followers of the UWP seem to have a very warped sense of what democracy is all about. In your mind the only true outcome of the election would have been for UWP to win. Any other result would be unfair and not free, infact, your leader concluded that the only seats that were won fairly were the three seats which his party won. Do you know how pathetic you guys sound. Your party ran a negative campaign fueled by violence, civil disorder and intimidation without offering anything to the electorate which would entice them to vote for you (apart from a fake $10.000 per head bribe for every Dominican if you were elected) but Dominicans saw that bribe for what it was and comprehensively rejected your party at the polls. The observer missions on the ground all came to the same conclusion “FREE” and “FAIR”. You guys should just accept your defeat and move on.

      • December 24, 2019

Clayton, everyone has the right to stand up for themselves when that demand arises. But without the tools to stand up with, such as sound wisdom, knowledge and a healthy financial status–the stand-up will be a no, no!

When a political party cannot afford to stand on its own, for whatever the situation may be; don’t you think that it is a turn-off for anyone who wants to decide to choose them as the Government of the Nation?

Well for me, that is weak, real, real, weakness, wee!

Corruption is corrosive. It eventually destroys all democratic norms and practices. I have a good feeling that many UWP supporters might be feeling down right now because the massive and ubiquitous corrupt practices that upended the true results. Weak people give up but the strong endure to the end. This is a fight for the soul of the nation. Even though the odds may be against you with the equally corrupt justice system, fight on. God doesn’t like the grotesque and widespread electoral fraud that took place during the just concluded sham elections. Millions of filthy money was used to corruptly engineer a particular outcome. A very high number of Dominicans will still continue to be on the unemployment line; shamefully visiting the Red Clinic for handouts until if collapses; lack disposable income for a rainy day for sickness and emergencies; and ruled by a disgraced king instead of a humble, morally and ethically strong prime minister. The descent to the abyss is almost complete.

    • December 23, 2019

@Ibo France “Weak people give up but the strong endure to the end”. How much further is that end in your mind?

Because, I believe your party reached the end following their last defeat, 20 years ago. When kind of end that you are heading to when right now, they don’t have the financial resource to stand with that quest or journey?

There is a saying that it has got to get worse before it gets better; can your part handle that degree of “worse”

“This is a fight for the soul of the nation”. I always want to grind my teeth to pieces when I read that foolishness from you all. The Nation’s soul would be at complete rest if you and yours would stop the antagonization.

If you want to fight for soul, fight for the soul of your followers, which has been in captive by the power of you all’s father, Satan. Each one of you needs an exorcism, starting with your leader. But God must be the Exorcist, not Pope, Bishop, and surely not your fake evangelist.

These idiots are making the same mistake they have been making since 2005 and the refuse to make changes. The UWP is a prisoner of its own stupidity. Has the UWP reviewed the results of the December 6 election where their popular vote count dropped by over 1000 compared to 2014? UWP is not a popular party, Dominicans don’t like bullies and they have rejected this violent party.

Having fought against any form of electoral reform in the lead up to the elections, Skerritt goes in national media minutes after the results were declared and made electoral reform a matter of urgency withing his first one hundred days in office. He has since contacted Sir Dennis Byron to review the elector laws and processes in Dominica. It therefore says a lot. It is a reasonabe conclusion by the uneducated man that he knew that the process was tainted and would work in his favor thus his staunch reaistance to any form of reform. Any judge with any conscience will look closely at his statement and ask why the urgency to implement reforms moments after winning the elections. This statement should ring loudly in the ears and head of the judge mandated to hear the case. The international airport did become a matter of urgency after he won. Elections are not due until five years later. It seems a reasonable conclusion that Skerrit had an agenda when he was so stridently against reform.
