A collection of recent paintings by Dominican artist Francilia Agar is the feature of a new solo exhibition titled “I Am Dominica,” housed at Vetivert Contemporary Fine Art Gallery of Dominica.
The exhibition officially launched on Tuesday, February 3, at Lacou, Melrose House, Roseau, shared a press release from the team.
Organizers add that the timing of the exhibition aligns with the Carnival season, serving as a lively and heartfelt homage to Dominica. Describing her work as an expressive use of color, movement, and texture, Agar’s artwork is said to embody the island’s vibrant landscapes, cultural memories, and deep-rooted sense of identity.

This new series of artworks follows Agar’s acclaimed 2024 exhibition, “I Am Kalinago,” which explored themes of heritage, belonging, and place.
“In ‘I Am Dominica’, Agar broadens this narrative, celebrating the island as both homeland and muse, shaped by nature, history, and lived experience,” explains the release.
Francilia Agar was born in Sineku, Dominica, and was adopted at the age of two by the Agar family. She is a skilled pianist, educator, and multidisciplinary artist. Currently based in Arizona, Agar maintains a strong ongoing connection to Dominica, frequently returning to exhibit her work and engage with the local arts community.
Her paintings often reflect a unique dialogue between the lush vegetation of the Caribbean and the contrasting desert landscapes of the American Southwest, created through an intuitive and personal approach to mark-making, said the release.

What a wonderful way to pay homage to, and stay connected to the birth land of many of those who live abroad.
