VIDEO: Good Samaritan saves baby sperm whale off Dominica’s coast

In what has captured the hearts of many on social media, a Good Samaritan was seen on film saving a baby sperm whale from a plastic bag.

The footage, taken on May 2, showed a diver, swimming up to the gentle giant and removing the potentially deadly bag from its mouth.

It was posted on the Instagram page of diver Nigel Seraphin who appealed for the protection of the world’s oceans, and wildlife.

“That’s how easy we destroy our oceans and our wildlife,” he wrote. “We need to pay more attention to where we dispose of our trash. It should also be noted that Sperm whale babies have a very high mortality rate. Let’s do our best to protect our oceans and its wildlife.”

According to the United Nations Environmental Program, plastic in the oceans is a global problem. It says every day, the equivalent of 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic are dumped into the world’s oceans, rivers, and lakes. Every year 19-23 million tonnes of plastic waste leaks into aquatic ecosystems, polluting lakes, rivers, and seas.

“Plastic pollution can alter habitats and natural processes, reducing ecosystems’ ability to adapt to climate change, directly affecting millions of people’s livelihoods, food production capabilities, and social well-being,” the organization said on its website.

Last year the Government of Dominica announced that it will create the world’s first marine protected area for the endangered sperm whale. The nearly 300 square kilometers of sea on the island’s west coast serve as key nursing and feeding grounds for the sea creatures.

“We want to ensure these majestic and highly intelligent animals are safe from harm and continue keeping our waters and our climate healthy,”  the prime minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, said in a statement.

may be we need to look at where the plastic bag came from, there are bumping sites of basically every cliff between every village on the Westcoast where people push their trash off the cliff, out of sight out of mind. but if you sail up the west coast you can clearly see the trash waterfalls…

A beautiful thing to see. Hopefully, there will be more effort made to do regular clean up of the bays, river mouths, and ocean areas all around Dominica to minimize this happening again.

Blessings to you the diver for your courage and love shown to Jah’s beautiful addition to our oceans. Love and guidance.

Thank you for being a good Samantarian to the sea creatures.
I one day want to take my children whale watching. And if they are destroyed by our pollution of the ocean, one of our tourists attractions will also be affected.

      Thank you very very much
