Walk for Cancer a resounding success, says official

Participants of the Walk for Cancer

Dominicans turned out in large numbers to support this year’s ‘Walk for Cancer Care’  which took place on Sunday, October 6, 2024, prompting President of the Dominica Cancer Society (DSC), Yvonne Alexander to describe it as an “overwhelming success.”

The event was organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services.

“Just from the turnout of the individuals who participated I am already saying that it was an overwhelming success and we really have to thank the public for coming,” she said. “We were not quite sure what the response would have been, because this is the first time we are having the walk on a Sunday. We have traditionally held it on a Saturday.”

Alexander continued, “I was happy that bus drivers came along and were able to shuttle people to the commencement point. We are really very pleased.”

She added, “We saw all age groups of individuals walking. We saw survivors walking, family, friends, supporters, coworkers…”

She mentioned that some public officials were unable to participate, however they sent individuals to represent them.

Furthermore, Yvonne believes that people turn out in large numbers because they understand that cancer prevention is a huge cause that everyone across Dominica has a vested interest in.

In a previous statement, she indicated that the DCS has a Cancer Care Fund where all of the proceeds of the walk are deposited, and which allows the society to assist those in need to meet the cost of cancer treatment.

This year the ‘Walk for Cancer Care’ was observed under the theme: “Hope in Every Step”.
