
A Tropical Storm Warning was issued for Dominica by The Government of Dominica from 11:00 o’clock last night.
A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning area, generally within 36 hours.
At 11 pm, the center of Tropical Storm Bret was located near latitude 13.5 north, longitude 55.2 west or about 429 miles south east of Dominica.
Bret is moving towards the west near 16 mph, and this motion, with an increase in forward speed, is expected to continue for the next several days.
On the forecast track, the center of the system is projected to move across the Windward Islands, near St. Lucia and Martinique overnight Thursday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph (100 km/h) with higher gusts, extending outward up to 115 miles from the centre.
The centre is expected to pass about 88 miles south of Dominica overnight Thursday, as a tropical storm.
Estimated arrival of earliest tropical storm force winds is from Thursday afternoon.
Impacts are expected across Dominica, mainly overnight Thursday into Friday.
EXPECTED CONDITIONS:
An increase in wind speeds on Thursday becoming sustained tropical storm force overnight (39 to 73 mph);
An increase in showers and thunderstorm activity from Thursday afternoon. An increase in intensity, with 100 to 200 mm/ 4 to 8 inches of rainfall or greater in higher elevation projected;
Deterioration in sea conditions on the east coast tomorrow, Thursday, with waves peaking to 4.0 m / 12.0 ft.
EXPECTED IMPACTS:
Rivers, streams, gutters and ravines will overflow their banks and flood surrounding areas from overnight Thursday;
Landslides and rock falls from overhanging cliffs and hillsides;
Loose objects can become missiles;
People living near the coast will be impacted;
Some trees and power lines can be downed.
Residents should continue to monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Bret and activate hurricane season plans to protect life, property and livelihood.
